TJ Cloutier became involved in a large pot early here in Level 1. With a pot close to 2,000, and the board showing , TJ puts out a bet of 600. His opponent, Lee Wilson of Houston, TX, makes a minimum raise to 1,200. TJ quickly re-raises the action to 3,100, and Wilson makes the call.
The turn card is the , and Cloutier makes it 4,000 to go. Wilson counts out his stack -- he has about 6,600 left -- and after a moment, makes the call.
The river shows the , and both players check. Wilson is the first to flip his cards, , and Cloutier, looking frustrated, quietly passes his cards to the dealer. After the hand, Cloutier is down to less than 3,000, while Wilson increases his chip count to about 18,000.
Table 20 is shaping up to be a very interesting table. In the one seat we have Chris Bell, the 2005 Trump Classic Champion. In seat two sits Allie Prescott, whom made the final table of this event in 2006. In seat three sits Zachary Hyman, who has won over $250,000 in the last couple of months, including taking first in a preliminary event at the Five Star World Poker Classic in April.
Steve Dannenmann raised from middle position to 150. Thomas Hover called from two seats behind, and the small blind called as well.
On a flop of , play checked around the table. The turn was the , and the small blind bet out 400. Dannenmann raised to 1,100, and Hover folds. The small blind thought, then called.
The river was the , and the small blind checked. Dannenmann bet out 1,600, and the small blind folded the face up. Dannenmann nodded his head to acknowledge the fold as he pulled in the pot.
Over on Table 27, there have been a number of sizable pots early. On a board showing , the player in Seat 3, Tom Quinlan, makes a bet of 1,000. His sole opponent, in Seat 7, makes the call.
The river brings the , and Quinlan pauses for a moment to glance back at his cards.
"Well, I have a straight, what should I do?" he mumbles, half-audibly.
Quinlan reaches into his stack and pulls out two orange chips, worth 1,000 each. When his opponent calls, Quinlan tables Q-J, and the other player nods knowingly as he mucks his cards. Quinlan rakes in a nice pot worth over 7,000, and is up close to 16,000 early.
As the tables start to fill up completely, names such as Jimmy Tran, Ted Lawson, Steve Dannenmann, Alan "BodogAri" Engel, and the seventh-place finisher at the WSOP Circuit event at Caesars Las Vegas, Thomas Hover, can be found amongst the participants.
Over on Table 19, a player that likes to be referred to only as "Gio" has taken a couple of nice pots. On a board of , Gio makes a bet of 3,000 into a pot of 3,000. The player in seat seven tanks for about a minute before folding. Gio flashes the .
Immediately after this hand, he takes down a 700 chip pot when his opponent in the one seat folds.
"If we had a circuit MVP, this person would've won all four years," said World Series of Poker Media Director Nolan Dalla of Doug 'Rico' Carli. Carli has cashed an amazing 34 times on the WSOP circuit and owns two circuit titles. He's reached the final table a staggering 19 times and will be going for number 20 here today. Carli drew a starting table with 2005 WSOP Main Event runner-up Steve Dannenman.
T.J. Cloutier is in the field of play today. As is Gavin Smith, sporting his "I can dodge bullets baby" shirt. Gavin wasted no time getting into the action, and lost a few chips on the tournament's opening hand.
It's high noon in the Big Easy, and the cards are in the air. The tournament room continues to fill up, as the players make their way to their seats. Be sure to keep it tuned right here and follow along with the action, as we work our way through the field here on Day 1.
