Cricket vs. Baseball

The cricket conversation is still going on and has now turned a little nasty. Lisandro (Australian) and Hazan (English) are arguing with Lederer and Gordon (States) about which is better, cricket or baseball (it was inevitable, really) -- when I left they were musing over which sport has better newspaper articles written about it?

Patrick Antonius is also trying to join in the discussion, despite admitting he knows nothing of either sport.

Elsewhere, my early pick to do well, Richard Ashby, is sitting on a whopping 22,000 chips. I'm feeling a little smug right now.

Table Talk: A Hectic Travel Schedule

Kirk Morrison was caught yawning at the table by Bruno Fitoussi.

Bruno: "When did you get in?"
Kirk: "Two days ago."

Bruno: "Do you ever get home?"
Kirk: "I was in Barcelona for the last two weeks before coming here."

Bruno: "Where did you finish in Barcelona?"
Kirk: "On the floor!"

PokerNews Video: Kirk Morrison - Kirk and Tiff Reunited

PokerNews grabbed Kirk Morrison on first break from the £2,500 HORSE tourney on day one of the WSOPE. We usually save Kirk for an interview later in the day since he is so accommodating, but he and Tiff were eager to be reunited having not seen each other since all the way back at the WSOP.

Motorbikes, Cricket and Just a Little Bit of Poker

Table 11 needs reminding that there is a poker game going on. Just before the break I saw Patrik Antonius, Phil Gordon, Howard Lederer, JJ Hazan and Jeff Lisandro having a very intense conversation about motorbikes. Now I have just witnessed Hazan and Lisandro explaining the rules of cricket to Lederer and Gordon (both of whom admitted to being closet cricket fans).

At this same table earlier the dealer made a boo-boo, when he mistook the Stud hand being played for Razz and awarding the chips to the wrong player. I hear it was resolved and taken in good jest (lets face it, we have all done the same - in fact I'm reporting this snippet to potentially save my blushes for when I inevitably do the same).

Different Tables; Different Games

Each table is playing at their own pace. The betting limits are the same (at the moment they are 100/200) but each table is playing at a different speed.

For example, Doyle Brunson's table (which includes Jesus Ferguson and Kenny Tran) is playing Razz.

John Juanda's table (including Michael Binger) is playing Omaha 8.

Gus Hansen's table (including ZeeJustin and Allen Cunningham) is playing Seven-card Stud.

Spacial Limitations

Shortly after he busted out of the £2,500 HORSE event, Marcel Luske stopped by the bar which also happens to be where Poker News live update team is set up. The Flying Dutchman mentioned that he was not pleased with the lack of available playing space. He was very cramped at his table especially after four other players ordered massages and they had to squeeze in massage therapists into the already narrow aisles.

Today's event had to be spread out over two different floors in the casino and the poker room has very limited access for personnel, tournament staff, and the media. Due to tiny size of the poker room, the area is off limits to spectators.

PokerNews Video: WSOP Day 1 - Press Conference and Field Update

This morning, World Series of Poker and official WSOPE sponsor Betfair held a press conference at a nearby movie theatre. Jeffrey Pollack and some officials from Betfair addressed the media, and then Phil Hellmuth and David 'Devilfish' Ulliott were brought on stage to answer questions about the World Series of Poker and provide some friendly trash-talk.
