James Obst Hops Out to an Early Lead in $50,000 Poker Players Championship

Level 6
James Obst
James Obst

Day 1 of Event #58: $50,000 Poker Players Championship has come to an end here inside the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas with James Obst leading the way after bagging up 1,208,000 in chips. WSOP bracelet winner Aaron Katz joins Obst as the only other player to bag over a million after ending with 1,192,500. Rounding out the top three is German pro (and also one-time bracelet winner) Johannes Becker, who finished the night with 898,000.

Obst was able to steadily increase his stack throughout the day, including in a hand where he busted Dzmitry Urbanovich after catching two pair on the river. Obst entered fresh off of his victory in the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship for his second career bracelet and is currently best positioned to make a run at his third.

The event has drawn 75 entrants so far, which is close to the same number Day 1 ended with last year. More are expected to enter tomorrow as the poker world's best and brightest take their shot at arguably the most prestigious tournament of the year.

Day 1 Action

Day 1 got off to a modest start with 12 players, as is typically the case in championship events, with many players opting to enter in later levels when blinds are more significant. Among the early birds were Scott Seiver, Viktor Blom, Dylan Linde, David Benyamine, Bryce Yockey and Daniel Negreanu — who entered looking to turn his summer around after a rough first half of the 2024 WSOP.

Daniel Negreanu

While Negreanu was able to navigate his way to a top-ten stack, Seiver found himself making an early exit after getting short and shoving preflop with ace-five suited into Yockey's ace-king.

Unlike years prior, two-time Poker Player's Championship winner Dan Cates made a subdued entrance in the latter part of Level 1, opting to wear a black t-shirt with jeans instead of a costume. The casual-looking Cates was able to find a bag but will have some work to do as he currently sits with less than half a starting stack at 124,500.

Gus Hansen also made a rare appearance after deciding to late reg a couple of levels after the start. The last time "The Great Dane" cashed in a WSOP event was back in 2019, when he placed 689th in the Main Event. Despite his relative absence on the tournament scene, Hansen proved he can still hang with the best by finishing seventh in chips with 652,500.

Some other notables who bagged into Day 2 include Eli Elezra (164,000), Benny Glaser (205,500), Nick Schulman (311,500), Jason Mercier (344,500), Erick Lindgren (480,000), three-time PPC winner Michael Mizrachi (489,000), and the man with the second-most bracelets — Phil Ivey, who bagged up a very healthy 567,000.

Defending champion Brian Rast had a rough go of it and was left short after being scooped by Maxx Coleman in a hand of Omaha Hi-Lo. Talal Shakerchi and Erick Lindgren chopped up the rest of Rast's chips in the same game a while later.

Among those joining Rast on the rail were David "ODB" Baker, Felipe Ramos, Philip Sternheimer, Koray Aldemir, and Yuri Dzivielevski — who busted late in the evening in a three-way clash with Saya Ono and John Monnette.

The tournament will resume on Monday, June 24, at 1 p.m. local time for Day 2. Play will resume on Level 7, which features 3,000/6,000 blinds with 6,000/12,000 betting limits. Levels will remain 100 minutes each and players will get 15-minute breaks after each level, with an extended 60-minute dinner break after Level 9. Late registration will remain open until the start of Level 10 (approximately 7:45 p.m.)

Hal Rotholz raised to 6,500 from the cutoff and action folded to Benny Glaser in the small blind, who shoved for his last 74,000. Rotholz asked for a count and called to put Glaser at risk.

Dzivielevski Eliminated by Ono in Three-Way All-In

Level 6
Yuri Dzivielevski
Yuri Dzivielevski

Pot-Limit Omaha

Phil Ivey and Rob Hollink traded pots before John Monnette won a hand without showdown against Saya Ono. In the meanwhile, Yuri Dzivielevski was nursing a short stack and the chips then eventually went into the middle.

Monette started the action with a raise to 8,000 in the cutoff and Ono called. Dzivielevski raised the pot in the small blind and Monnette repotted to 108,000 total. Ono called all-in as did Dzivielevski for 38,500.

Yuri Dzivielevski: KQJ10 All in
Saya Ono: KQ95 All in
John Monnette: AJ53

The 873 flop gave Monnette bottom pair and a flush draw while Ono improved with the 6 turn. Nothing changed on the K river and Dzivielevski was eliminated while Ono doubled through Monnette for the remainder of her short stack.

"Oh by the way, congrats on the bracelet," Monette told Dzivielevski and the latter replied "I love the moustache, it really fits to you" while the main and side pot was sorted out. "I am not sure about that," Monnette replied before the showdown proceeded.

Rotholz Bounces Back

Level 6
Hal Rotholz
Hal Rotholz

Limit Hold'em

Hal Rotholz recalled in the break that he had been down to as little as 80,000 in chips before he scored a crucial double when his redraw with the same nut straight got there. Ever since, things appear to have been running smooth again and he just dragged in another pot.

Renan Bruschi was spotted leading the AK744 river out of the small blind and Rotholz then raised on the button.

"Really? You have a set?" Bruschi asked and sigh-called. Rotholz tabled his AA for aces full and Bruschi mucked the Q10 for the flopped nut flush.

Koray Aldemir and Yingui Li are no longer on the table while Benny Glaser had been moved there.

Weisman Cannot Bluff Hui

Level 5
Phillip Hui
Phillip Hui

No-Limit Hold'em

With the flop showing K66, Michael Rocco in the cutoff bet 4,500. Dylan Weisman on the button raised to 20,500 and Rocco folded.

Weisman then raised to 6,500 in the cutoff and Phil Hui defended the big blind. On a flop of 652, Hui check-called for 8,500 and did so again for 42,000 on the J turn. That led them to the 6 river on which Hui checked once more.

Weisman fired out a bet worth 110,000 and Hui quickly called.

"You got it," Weisman said and flashed the 97 for a missed gutshot. Hui had that beat with 22 for a full house to rake in a decent pot.

Josh Arieh opened to 6,000 and got calls from Erick Lindgren and Maxx Coleman.

The flop was 996 and Coleman checked. Arieh continued for 10,000 and Lindgren was the only caller.

Arieh check-called 18,000 on the 5 turn and the river was the Q. Both players checked.

"Is that any good?" Arieh said, exposing 87 for a straight.

"It's a good start," replied Lindgren who mucked, allowing Arieh to show the rest of his hand: QQ for a full house.

Omaha Hi-Lo

Talal Shakerchi opened from middle position and Brian Rast moved his last few chips into the middle from the cutoff. Erick Lindgren called in the big blind to put Rast officially at risk while Shakerchi also called.

Lindgren led out on the A9K flop. Shakerchi flatted.

The same betting pattern was repeated following the 6 turn with Shakerchi and Lindgren checking to showdown on the 8 river.

Rast tabled A863 but could not win the high half of the pot as Shakerchi held KJ43 while Lindgren had AJ92 to send him to the rail on Day 1, ensuring there will be no back to back champion this year.

Diebold Wins Monster Pot Without a Showdown

Level 3

2-7 Triple Draw

David "ODB" Baker raised from the cutoff and was three-bet by Ben Diebold on the button. Gus Hansen called cold in the big blind and Baker called as well.

Hansen and Diebold both drew two and Baker drew three on the first draw. Action checked to Diebold, who bet. Both Hansen and Baker called.

On the second draw, Hansen drew two, Baker drew three, and Diebold stood pat. It was checked to Diebold again and he bet. Hansen raised, Baker made it three bets to go and both Diebold and Hansen called.

All three players stood pat on the final draw and Hansen checked to Baker, who bet. Diebold raised, Hansen folded, Baker re-raised and, undeterred, Diebold made it four bets to go.

Baker quickly folded and Diebold dragged the large pot without showing.
