ElkY Pressures Shakerchi

After Talal Shakerchi opened for 14,000 from early position, he received three callers and it was four-way action to the {3-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} flop. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier was first to act in the small blind and checked, opening the door for Shakerchi to bet 42,000.

Noah Schwartz then raised to 93,000 from middle position, Paul Newey folded from the cutoff, and Grospellier woke up with a check-raise to 244,000. Shakerchi made a relatively quick call and Schwartz decided to get out of the way.

When the {K-Hearts} appeared on the turn, Grospellier slid out a bet of 444,000. Again Shakerchi wasted little time in making the call, bringing about the {9-Clubs} river. The Frenchman refused to slow down and came out with a hefty 777,000 bet, one that gave Shakerchi pause. The latter thought for a solid four minutes, knowing a call would cost half his remaining stack, but he ultimately laid it down.

Big Raise from Phua on the River

With around 100,000 in the pot on a flop of {A-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, Paul Phua bet out 50,000 only to have Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi raise to 105,000. Phua went to make the call, but he accidentally put out too many chips, which constituted a min-raise to 160,000. Miazrachi tried to take advantage by four-betting to 305,000, but Phua paid to see the {6-Diamonds}.

Both players opted to slow down with a check, and Phua did the same on the {9-Clubs} river. Mizrachi took the opportunity to bet 350,000, and Phua asked the dealer to spread the pot. He thought for about a minute before announcing a raise and making it 1.1 million more to go.

The Grinder didn't seem too enthused and released his hand after a thinking it over for about 20 seconds.

"I Can Raise, Right?"

When we reached Table 401, the board had already been completed {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{a-Hearts}. Frederic Banjout checked, and Sam Trickett fired 340,000. Banjout thought for a moment, then asked the dealer, "I can raise, right?"

The dealer told him, "Yes."

Banjout reached for lavender T100,000 chips with one hand, and orange T5,000 chips with another, and check-raised to 940,000. Trickett was visibly upset.

"Wow," he blurted. "Can I speak?"

The dealer said that he was allowed to speak, but that Banjout wasn't. WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel was called over to confirm the heads-up talking rules, and after he left, Trickett asked Banjout, "Do you have {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs} exactly? Do you speak english?"

Banjout simply took a swig from his Pepsi and smiled.

"You checked so quickly on the river," Trickett muttered. "This is a pretty big pot for this stage of the tournament."

Trickett eventually made the call, and Banjout tabled {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} for a straight. Trickett tabled {k-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for the same straight, and the 2 million-chip pot was chopped.

"You were calling the whole time!" Andrew Robl jabbed.

"Yeah," Trickett admitted, chuckling. "I'm just setting you up for when you try and get me off of a straight."

Fours Full for Sexton

Daniel Negreanu checked the {A-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs} flop and Mike Sexton bet 30,000. Robert Bright called and Negreanu folded.

The turn was the {A-Hearts} and paired the board. Sexton checked and Bright bet 35,000. Sexton put in a check-raise to 115,000 and Bright made the call.

On the {8-Clubs} river, Sexton bet 225,000. After a couple minutes of thought, Bright called.

Sexton showed the {4-Hearts}{4-Spades} for a full house and Bright showed the {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts} for a straight. Sexton won the pot with fours full of aces.

Steven and Lamb Battle

Nick Schulman opened to 16,000 from early position, Ben Lamb three-bet to 56,000 on his direct left, and Brandon Steven four-bet to 107,000 from Lamb's direct left. The action folded back to Schulman, who folded as well, and Lamb called.

The flop came down {7-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}, and Lamb checked. Steven fired 77,000, and Lamb tanked before check-raising to 200,000. Steven responded with a re-raise to 362,000, and Lamb tank-folded.

Small One for Newey

On a flop of {5-Hearts}{4-Spades}{5-Clubs}, Talal Shakerchi bet 40,000 and received a call from Paul Newey. The {10-Spades} saw Shakerchi bet 85,000, and Newey hit the tank. When he emerged after a minute or so, he tossed out a raise to 275,000. Shakerchi didn't take long to make his decision and released his hand.

Hansen with Big River Raise Against Mercier

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier checked the {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{2-Clubs} board and Jason Mercier bet 108,000. Behind him, Gus Hansen tanked and then called. Grospellier folded.

The river completed the board with the {J-Clubs} and Mercier led into Hansen for 265,000. Hansen took some time before raising to 932,000. The raise sent Mercier into the tank and he spent several long minutes there. Eventually, Mercier folded saying, "So sick, it's so sick," quietly under his breath.

"You going to show one card? Something goofy?" Mercier asked Hansen.

"You can see the whole hand for $20,000," responded Hansen.

Mercier didn't take the offer and Hansen's cards weren't shown.
