Woodward Wiped Out

The action flop was {8-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} which created a series of raises from Matt Woodward and his opponent until the last chips were in the middle.

Woodward held {a-Spades}{J-Spades} for top pair, top kicker but his opponent had {8-Clubs}{8-Spades} for a set.

The turn was the {5-Diamonds} and river the {J-Clubs}, just to rub salt into the wound, to leave Woodward crippled and eliminated a few hands later.

Yang Takes a Big Hit

We heard all in and a call on table #316 and Jerry Yang had all his chips in the center of the table...

Yang ended up all in pre-flop with his pocket kings against an opponents pocket aces.

The {7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{j-Clubs} board left Yang with less than 8,000 chips.

Farha Moving Chips

With a raise from the button to 1,625, Sam Farha defended his big blind with a call.

"Let's see how you go in position!" chuckled Farha as the flop landed {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. Both players checked and the turn was the {5-Clubs}. Farha fired 2,000 and his opponent called.

The river brought the {4-Spades} and Farha fired out a hefty 7,000. His opponent thought long and hard but eventually released as Farha has been very active after dinner to chip up to around 70,000 chips.

A Pretty Good Miss

Carter Phillips has been hidden in plain sight all day and started a recent hand with about 60,000 in chips. He opened pre-flop for 1,200 from middle position and was called by the big blind. That player led into Phillips for 1,500 on a king-high flop, {2-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Phillips called to the turn, a board-pairing {k-Hearts}. His opponent bet 3,000 and again Phillips called.

The river was the {3-Diamonds}. Phillips' opponent fired a last bet of 5,000 that Phillips called.

"I missed," said the other player. He opened {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} -- not a miss at all, but actually a five-high straight that Phillips couldn't beat.

Lauren's Got Your Number

We happened upon Lauren Kling's table just as she was calling a four-bet from the same fellow she tangled with in an earlier hand. They saw a {K-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop and the action was checked to Kling in the hijack. She bet 5,600 and her opponent called from UTG. The turn was the {4-Hearts}. Mr. UTG checked, Kling bet 13,625 and she got a call. The river fell the {Q-Diamonds} and after Mr. UTG checked a third time, Kling moved all-in for 21,100.

"You hit your set of kings. You call that (four-bet), you have to have K-K or Q-Q," Kling's opponent said as he agonized over his decision. "I feel like you hit your set."

"Will you show if I fold?" he asked. Kling shook her head.

"You've had my number the whole night. The four flush, now a set of kings?"

After a dwell that took the length of 2.5 segments on SportsCenter (playing on the nearby TV), he open-folded {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}.

Kling is up to 72,300.

Words of Wisdom

As we were passing by Lex Veldhuis' table, we heard the players discussing what sounded like it had to have been a pretty big suck-out. An older gentleman at the table very calmly noted that suck-outs are a part of the game.

"It's like Hyman Roth said," he began, referring to the Jewish mobster in the Godfather movies. "This is the business we've chosen."

Chau Giang
Chau Giang

When we arrived at the table the board read {k-Spades}{9-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} and Chau Giang fired a 7,000-chip bet. Antonio Esfandiari popped it to 15,000 and Giang moved all in.

Esfandiari called and tabled {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}, Giang showed {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs}.

The river brought a {k-Hearts} to the table, giving a full house to Esfandiari, Giang is out of the tournament.

Aces for Amanda

Facing a raise to 800 and a three-bet to 2,800, Amanda Baker made the call from the small blind as the original raiser also came along for the ride.

Baker check-called a 5,000-chip bet on the {2-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{J-Diamonds} flop before the {4-Diamonds} landed on the turn and Baker check-called 8,000 this time.

The river landed the {6-Hearts} and both players checked to see Baker table her {A-Clubs}{A-Spades} to scoop the pot and move to 60,000 in chips.
