James Copeland has become the executioner of Blue #5. First, he got Chad Brown all in before the first draw. After the first draw, Copeland made Number One. Brown had a chance to catch up for a chop, drawing with 7-4-3-2 after the second draw. He didn't catch the five he needed, instead drawing a seven to pair sevens.
Shortly thereafter, he eliminated Phil Hellmuth by again making Number One, this time on the second draw. Hellmuth stood pat after the second draw with a Q-7, perhaps hoping to induce Copeland to break his hand and draw to a pair. It didn't happen; Hellmuth is out.
Shun Uchida has been quietly building an empire of tournament chips throughout the day. He currently has about 62,000 chips, by far the largest stack remaining in the tournament.
Chad Brown is still hanging in there. After committing the last of his chips before the first draw, both he and Hellmuth drew two, then one, then one. Brown showed 9-8-7-6-4, but Hellmuth only had a 10.
We began the day with 238 players, and almost 200 of them have been eliminated. As we start the final one-hour level of the night, just seven tables remain. Mike Wattel is our presumptive chip leader with about 44,000 chips.
Nick Schulman, who jumped out to the chip lead early in the day, had a rough time after dinner. He was finally all in before the first draw against a single opponent. Schulman drew two cards each time, holding an 8-5-3, and couldn't improve enough to beat his opponent, who stood pat after the second draw with a ten.
David Singer battled his way through eight-and-a-half levels of play today, but in the end that wasn't enough to save him. He got the last of his chips in with a draw to "number one," holding 6-5-3-2. His opponent drew one on the river and made a jack, a very beatable hand. Singer couldn't draw to his hand, however, pairing sixes. He has left the Amazon Room and the tournament.
Phil Hellmuth limped, Shawn Sheikhan raised, Chad Brown called, and Hellmuth called. All three drew two cards. Hellmuth checked, Sheikhan bet, and Brown and Hellmuth called.
This time Hellmuth stood pat, Sheikhan drew one, and Brown drew two. Hellmuth then bet, and both called. For the third draw, Hellmuth stood pat, and Sheiky and Brown both took one. All three checked.
Hellmuth showed a 10-6, then Sheikhan showed a 10-5-4-3-2. Brown mucked. Hellmuth still has 26,500, Sheikhan is up to 13,500, and Brown down to 6,500.
