While perusing around the tournament area, we spotted two friendly faces over on Table 25. PokerStars Team Online members Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen and Randy "nanonoko" Lew are seated right next to one another, with Lew having position on his fellow teammate.
While both Petersen and Lew are known for their online prowess - Lew routinely crushes ring games while Petersen has nearly $5.8 million in online tournament earnings - they both have major live scores. In Season 8, Peterson won the EPT Copenhagen Main Event, earning $444,595, while in Season 5, Lew shipped the APPT Macau Main Event, pocketing $484,617.
We'll certainly keep an eye on the two as the battle it out on the actual felt today, and if we see anymore needles on Twitter, we'll pass them along as well.
Daniel Negreanu has had a bit of success this year, making two final tables at the inaugural World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific, including winning the Main Event there for A$1,038,825.
On this hand, he battled with fellow Team PokerStars Pro Luca Pagano and made a flush on the river to scoop a very nice pot early.
On the flop, Pagano fired 400 before Negreanu raised to 1,200. The Italian made the call, then the dealer placed the out on the turn. Here, both players checked.
The river completed the board with the , completing the flush draw present on the flop, but also pairing the board. Pagano tossed out a bet of 1,800, then Negreanu fired in a raise to 5,000. Pagano took a minute or two, then made the call.
Negreanu tabled the for the nut flush, and Pagano mucked his hand.
With so many players in the mix today it comes as no surprise to see interesting table draws popping up.
David Peters comes here on the back of great form. Yesterday he was busy coming second at the PokerStars IPT San Remo Event for €155,000 and today he's back in the office. He has a difficult draw though with Andrew Chen, Kevin Iacafano and Dmitry Vitkind all to his right. At least he has position!
During one of the first hands of the day we walked up to Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov's table. The board read with around 2,200 chips in the pot. Katchalov checked to Andrew Pantling who fired out a hefty bet worth 8,500.
Katchalov went into the tank for quite a while but eventually he decided to not risk a lot of chips early on. Pantling was kind enough to flash his opponent the for quad kings. Katchalov saved himself some money and is just below the starting stack right now.
After a computer game style introduction and speeches from the powers that be, cards are in the air for Day 1b. The room certainly feels alive with players compared to yesterday.
Day 1b of the Season 9 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final is set to begin here in a few minutes in the beautiful principality of Monaco. Day 1a attracted a total of 108 players, which will surely be more than doubled by the Day 1b crowd.
Among the players we expect to see today are Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, and Eugene Katchalov.
The plan is to play another eight 75-minute levels with a 90-minute dinner break after Level 6.
