Ojha Takes Overall Lead in 2023 APPT Cambodia Main Event

Level 13 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante

The late registration for the flagship tournament of the 2023 PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Cambodia Main Event at the luxurious NagaWorld Integrated Resort in Phnom Penh has concluded. All three starting days combined created an overall field of 476 entries and generated a prize pool of $623,322, all of which will be distributed in the following two days when the tournament is playing down to the winner.

India's Vishal Ojha topped 58 survivors out of 219 entries on Day 1b while nearly half of the field was still in contention during the final stages of the turbo heat 1c, which attracted another 81 runners. Ojha bagged up 407,000 in chips to claim the overall lead, well ahead of Curtis Lim (316,500) and Victor Chong (210,000) who occupied the two remaining spots on the podium for today.

Among the big stacks in the top 10 for Day 1b were also Roman Kolotiuk, WSOP bracelet winner Guoliang Wei, Jhon Hendri, and Huu Dung Nguyen.

Other notables to bag and tag for Day 1b were Siarhei Chudapal, Natural8 ambassador Pete Chen, Renniel Galvez, Alexander Puchalski, Dhanesh Chainani, David Erquiaga, and Sven McDermott. Defending champion Puchalski needed two bullets to claim 74,000 to his name while last year's third-place finisher Galvez scored two very late double-ups to advance with 90,000.

The rise to the top of the leaderboard for Ojha started with a double-up through Laury Vanlerberghe with kings versus ace-jack before he then consistently added chips through various showdown pots. Another Frenchman fell victim to the hot run of Ojha in Romain Morvan before the player from India knocked out Australian High Roller Joshua McCully in the final hand of the night.

Many other familiar names of the Asia-Pacific poker region came up short of making Day 2, as more almost three quarters of the field departed throughout the 13 levels of 40 minutes each. Chien Chih Weng, Lester Edoc, Shardul Parthasarathi, Yunsheng Sun, Eric Wasylenko, Mauricio Salazar Sanchez, Valeriy Pak, and Junzhong Loo were among the casualties.

The 58 Day 1b survivors will join their 41 counterparts from Day 1a and everyone to bag and tag for the night on Day 1c. More than 120 players are expected to return to their seats at 1 p.m. local time in the grand ballroom at Naga 1 for the restart of Day 2. Blinds in level 14 will be 1,500-3,000 with a big blind ante of 3,000. The money bubble will burst and the race to the nine-handed final table then headlines the business end thereafter.

The overall attendance came up just shy of 500 entries and the initial $400,000 guarantee was surpassed by more than 50%, which comfortably beat the 378 entries of the previous edition in 2022 by a wide margin as well.

Stay tuned to find out who makes it one step closer to become the 2023 APPT Cambodia Main Event champion right here on PokerNews, as the live reporting team will be on the floor throughout the next two days until a winner has been crowned.

Qiyuan Huang

Qiyuan Huang jammed for the last 37,500 and Jiazhi Zhong called from one seat over. Haisheng Qiu then reraised to 70,000 and was forced to min-raise to 75,000. Zhong went deep in the tank and called to leave himself just 30,000 behind.

On a flop of A104, Zhong checked and Qiu jammed with the covering stack to force a reluctant fold from Zhong.

Qiyuan Huang: A10
Haisheng Qiu: 99

The K turn and A river gave Huang a triple up while Qiu earned the side pot.

Choi's Roller Coaster Commences Again

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Jennifer Cassell
Jennifer Cassell

Hun Tae Choi clashed with Jin Woo Kim and bet-jammed for 49,000 on the 985 flop for Kim to call with the covering stack.

Hun Tae Choi: J7
Jin Woo Kim: 98

"Flush draw, straight draw," an excited Choi yelled but the flush draw only came on the 3 turn. No heart but the 6 river came to the rescue as Choi celebrated a double.

He was then all-in soon after with the superior stack, looking up Jennifer Cassell for 61,000.

Cassell had her AK already exposed and Choi glanced at her, seemingly asking for permission to start his show again. He then grabbed his cards, smashed them in the middle of the table and yelled "pocket tens", revealing 1010.

The 842 flop gave Cassell the flush draw on top and she improved with the K turn and A river. Choi took it well when Cassell now leaped out of her seat to do a little happy dance as players from nearby tables clapped.

To top it off, Choi won the next all-in showdown to win back some chips.

Morvan Eliminated by Ojha

Level 12 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Romain Morvan
Romain Morvan

Vishak Ojha checked the Q957A river for Romain Morvan to bet 12,000 with around 20,000 behind. The table big stack mulled it over for a short while and moved all-in, as Morvan was struck right away.

The Frenchman tanked for a minute to pay it off and sighed upon seeing A9 on the other side of the table as his A7 for an inferior two pair were no good.

Triple Up for Chen; Seat Open for Hong

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Pete Chen
Pete Chen

In a three-way all-in, Hyunil Hong was the covering stack with KQ as he took on Heng Seng Lau with the AQ and Pete Chen, who tabled the A5.

The J4334 board avoided the elimination of Chen but he had to chop the main pot with Lau, who left Hong very short.

Hong doubled the next hand before Lau opened to 5,000 thereafter. Chen jammed for 11,000 and Hong did so for 15,000, as Lau looked both up.

Pete Chen: AJ
Hyunil Hong: KJ
Heng Seng Lau: A7

This time, Chen remained ahead thanks to a 104292 board as his kicker ensured a triple-up.

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Thijs Hilberts
Thijs Hilberts

With 13,000 in the middle to the 632 flop, the action escalated and three players got their chips into the middle. Thijs Hilberts was one of them for what appeared to be 27,300 in the big blind while Julian Warhurst was also at risk for 34,300. Both were covered by Hun Tae Choi with the far superior stack.

Thijs Hilberts: 63
Julian Warhurst: 66
Hun Tae Choi: KQ

The A turn and K river brought no help for Choi despite his vivid demands. Hilberts grabbed his belongings in disappointment and shrugged "too many chips in the pot".

Bonifacio Mondalo and Grant Gardner

One table in particular was six-handed on three occasions as several shorter stacks departed.

The first one to go was Ngoc Quoc Luat Tran, who was the shortest stack in a three-way showdown during which Denis Pham called his shove, then sigh-called the all-in of Jiazhi Zhong for 35,400 as well.

Ngoc Quoc Luat Tran: K9
Jiazhi Zhong: AK
Denis Pham: JJ

The A9245 board gave Zhong the best pair and Tran was knocked out.

Sameer Agarwal jammed the last 12,300 in the next hand for Grant Gardner to call in the big blind.

Sameer Agarwal: QQ
Grant Gardner: AJ

The 10556A board delivered the ace on the river. Wing Kei Chan then bowed out shortly after as the table had to wait for new players once more.

Alexander Puchalski
Alexander Puchalski

Defending champion Alexander Puchalski is already on the second bullet for the day and got it in for around the starting stack with the QQ. That had the 88 of his opponent crushed but the 765 flop was a mighty sweat.

However, the 7 turn and A river brought no upset and Puchalski doubled to an above-average stack.

Cowell Bows Out in Three-Way All-In; Choi Screams Out his Victory

Level 7 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Lewis Cowell
Lewis Cowell

A very loud scream emerged from right in front of the final table stage when a three-way all-in emerged. A shorter stack from South Korea was all-in with the QJ while Lewis Cowell had the AK exposed. Hun Tae Choi revealed the QQ from under the gun and had both opponents covered.

Choi started screaming even louder with a "yesssssss" on the Q104 flop when he made top set. It was followed by an almost crying "noooo" on the J turn. However, Choi then exploded on the 4 river and jumped out of his seat to celebrate vividly.

Guarantee in the Main Event Already Surpassed

Level 5 : Blinds 200/500, 500 ante
Tournament Room
Tournament Room

Near the end of level five, the tournament info shows 172 entries to boost the overall attendance to more than 350 entries. This has officially ensured that the $400,000 guarantee is not only met but easily surpassed already with five levels of late registration on Day 1b and the turbo heat 1c still to come.

So far, there are $455,706 in the pot but that number will very likely increase further in the hours to follow.
