Zhang and Mai Lead 41 Survivors After Day 1a of the 2023 APPT Cambodia $1,500 Main Event

Level 13 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Cheng Zhang

The return of the PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) to the Kingdom of Cambodia appears to be set to sail past the $400,000 guarantee in the flagship tournament of the stop at the five-star NagaWorld Integrated Resort in the heart of the capital. A total of 176 entries in the first of three starting flights were recorded for the 2023 APPT Cambodia $1,500 Main Event. Upon completion of 13 levels of 40 minutes each, the field of survivors was cut down to just 41 contenders.

A duo sits atop the leaderboard in Taiwan's Cheng Zhang (399,000) and Bien Mai (394,000), who are both separated by a mere two big blinds for Day 2. Especially Mai has racked up several deep runs in major live poker events in the Asia-Pacific region and comes fresh off scooping a PokerStars spadie in Event #21: Turbo Freezeout one day prior.

Notables in the overnight top ten also include Chao-Ting Cheng (241,000), WSOP bracelet winner Abhinav Iyer (187,000), Hao Tian (173,000), and Hal Rotholz (172,000).

Likewise among the survivors were Adrien Tantaro (164,500), Junnie Pamplona (139,500), Zong-Chi He (132,000), Anthony Cierco (82,500), 2022 APPT Cambodia Main Event finalist Yu-Chung "Nevan" Chang (77,500) as well as Aladin Reskallah (67,000). Their stack sizes are locked as players cannot participate in any further remaining flights once they bagged up chips unlike in other Asian live events where the bigger stack gets carried forward.

Mai was a threat on the tables throughout the day and consistently added chips to his stack, soaring to the top of the leaderboard after Quan Qiu ran with pocket kings into his pocket aces. Only a few minutes later, fellow big stack Zhang spiked an ace to crack the pocket kings of Eric Ceret to set up a two-horse race for the top spot.

Defending champion Alexander Puchalski and third-place finisher Renniel Galvez were among those to try and build a foundation for yet another deep run in the grand ballroom but both joined a long list of casualties throughout the day. Things started well for Puchalski with an early double with a flopped set but things didn't go as planned from there on.

The same also applied for Nang Quang Nguyen, Grant Gardner, Guy Taylor, Jenam Yu, Huu Dung Nguyen, Pete Chen, Guoliang Wei, Chien Chih Weng, Eric Wasylenko, and Valeriy Pak to mention just some of those who came and left without anything to show for.

Many of these well-known players are expected to take another shot at running up a stack in the two remaining flights on May 13, 2023, with a regular and a turbo heat scheduled. Day 1b is slated to kick off at 1pm with a level duration of 40 minutes each followed by Day 1c as of 8pm local time with 20-minute levels.

Both flights will complete 13 levels and the survivors advance to the penultimate tournament day. A single re-entry option is available in each Day 1 during the late registration period, which is open for the first ten levels.

Stay tuned for more live poker action from Cambodia as the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor until a winner has been crowned on Monday, May 15, 2023.

Zhang Binks an Ace to Sink Ceret

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Eric Ceret
Eric Ceret

A reraise to 11,000 was in front of Cheng Zhang and he then faced the shove by Eric Ceret for 63,500. That sent Zhang into the tank and he then called with the far superior stack.

Eric Ceret: KK
Cheng Zhang: AK

The suited ace instantly got there on the A76 flop, leaving Ceret with a single out. Nothing changed with the 9 turn and Q river to vault Zhang into the lead.

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Bien Mai
Bien Mai

Following an open raise, Bien Mai reraised to 8,000 out of the small blind and Quan Qiu in the big blind then four-bet to 40,000 with around 45,000 behind. The initial raiser folded and Mai eyeballed the stack of his table neighbour before pushing all-in.

Qiu sigh-called all-in and instantly mentioned "I don't want to play this hand."

Quan Qiu: KK
Bien Mai: AA

The A66 flop left Qiu with a miracle ahead and he joked "yeah, fuck me" while Mai replied "you still have runner-runner. None of that came on the 4 turn and 5 river as Mai added even more chips to his growing tower.

Hun Tae Choi

I multi-way action to the ]Jd10c8h] flop, Hun Tae Choi bet 5,000 out of the small blind. Adrien Tantaro jammed for 19,500 from under the gun and Daisuke Fujii tank-folded, as did one further player. Choi called with the marginally covering stack.

Adrien Tantaro: QQ
Hun Tae Choi: KJ

The 2 turn and 7 river kept Tantaro ahead as he doubled. Choi had some 10,000 left and bowed out in another three-way all-in soon after.

Fujii Doubles Through Choi; Remnant Busts

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Daisuke Fujii
Daisuke Fujii

On a completed board of A852A with some 21,500 in the middle, Daisuke Fujii had bet 14,200 and Hun Tae Choi raised to 32,000. Fujii jammed for another 14,200 on top and Choi asked for a count to then call.

Fujii revealed the A8 for aces full of eights, as Choi's J9 for a flush were no good.

Shortly after, Mark Remnant had a piece of the 422 flop with the 43. Choi revealed the 66 when they got it in, and the latter prevailed on the 9 turn and 8 river runout to knock out Remnant.

Souissi's River Shove Gets Value for a Big Stack

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Selim Souissi
Selim Souissi

"The pot was already big and I jammed the river, before that I called him down," Selim Souissi explained after he had just knocked out Bo Jin. The latter had bet all the way on the 852 flop and 3 turn, then checked the 2 river with around 30,000 behind.

Souissi's shove was called by Jin with the 99 and Souissi had the best of it with A2 for trips deuces. The Japan-based player instantly apologised for the suckout which Jin hated. "Don't say sorry, that's the worst thing you can say at the table man," Jin groaned before he departed.

Early Double for Puchalski

Level 4 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
Alexander Puchalski
Alexander Puchalski

Following an open raise to 800, four players called and that led them to the 984 flop on which it checked to the initial raiser. A continuation bet of 1,200 followed and Dezhong Li then raised to 5,300. Alexander Puchalski in the small blind check-raised to 10,300 to force out all other players except for Li, who pushed all-in and was quickly called by Puchalski.

Alexander Puchalski: 88
Dezhong Li: J10

Middle set versus the open-ended straight draw had Puchalski ahead, and that remained to be the case throughout the 10 turn and A river. Puchalski doubled for 30,800 and Li was left with around 2,000 but already bolted out of the tournament area.
