Adrian Attenborough’s Main Event Story
Australian pro Adrian Attenborough had over $1.4 million in earnings prior to his 2022 run in the WSOP Main Event, and he is poised to add to that number in a big way this week. Attenborough’s previous best run at the WSOP was in 2017, when he finished 53rd in the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event.
The 28-year-old poker pro now resides in Las Vegas and first learned to play poker after being introduced by family and friends when he was just 16 years old.
Prior to his Main Event run, Attenborough had eight WSOP-related cashes totaling $288,248. That included $108,908 for finishing runner-up in the 2019 WSOP International Circuit Sydney $5K Challenge.
According to Hendon Mob, Attenborough had $1,460,049 in career earnings leading up to his 2022 WSOP run. That included a career-best $361,660 for finishing third in the 2017 Bellagio Cup XIII. He also won the 2017 Macau Poker Cup 26 HK$25,000 NLH for $193,172 and took third in the 2017 Asia Poker League Million Sydney Main Event for $91,035.
“I am having fun. It’s the best spot to be in,” Attenborough said in an interview with PokerNews.
The Aussie is usually found in high-stakes cash games, but his approach remains largely the same.
“I don’t really think about different game formats, I just focus on game theory concepts. Maybe my short stack game is a bit rusty but we’ll see how that goes.”
Attenborough, who is looking to become just the second Australian to win the WSOP Main Event behind Joe Hachem (2005) will start the final table with 50,800,000, which will be 42 big blinds.
Attenborough’s Run to the Final Table
Attenborough started slow but remained in the top half of the chip counts over the first three days, and it was on Day 4 that he made his move up the leaderboard with a jump to 2.5 million. He rose to 7.7 million on Day 5 and bagged more than 28 million on Day 6.
But it was on Day 7 that he made two of the gutsiest plays of the tournament.
In the first hand, Matija Dobric raised from the button before the flop with K♦2♦ and Attenborough called from the big blind with 6♠5♣. The flop was 3♣3♠K♣ and Attenborough check-raised to 2.7 million after Dobric bet 500,000.
Dobric called and the turn was 7♥. Attenborough fired 7.3 with six-high, but Dobric called and the river was 8♣. Not fearing the flush, Attenborough shoved his last 12.2 million and Dobric got away from the best hand.
Later in the afternoon, Attenborough bet 4 million with K♣Q♣ with 10♠3♦K♥ on the flop. His opponent was Dobric once again, and the Croatian made it 9.2 million with a bluff of his own.
Attenborough called and the turn was 6♣. Attenborough checked to Dobric, who fired another 5.5 million. Attenborough called once again and the river was 2♥.
Dobric fired again on the river, this time enough to put Attenborough at risk for his last 23 million. Attenborough called after he spent a great deal of time in the tank and took down one of the biggest pots of the day with the biggest call of his life.
