Poker coach Gareth James explains why your shoving ranges need to change in a bounty tournament.
What is a PKO Tournament?
PKOs are all the rage right now because they add a different dynamic to a typical cash tournament.
Half the buy-in goes into the main prize pool, which is awarded in a standard fashion. The other half is placed on the heads of each and every player in the PKO tournament.
Half of this bounty is added to your account instantly when you eliminate an opponent. The remaining 50% is added to your own bounty making you a more attractive target for your opponents.
Should you be the last player standing, you win the first-place prize and your own bounty, which is usually pretty substantial by this stage.
Are partypoker’s PKOs Different to Elsewhere?
In short, yes.
Most PKOs are the same wherever you play them online. partypoker has two major differences to set them apart from the opposition.
- First, partypoker does not charge any rake on the bounty element of the buy-in. This means their bounties are larger and the overall rake charged on the tournament is less.
- Second, the champion and second-place finisher receive a very similar payout; it is often only a few dollars difference. This leaves the heads-up players to battle it out for the large final bounties and stops significant numbers of the PKO tournaments ending in an ICM chop.
