Player of the Week: Robert Campbell Claims Second Bracelet of the Summer

3 min read
Robert Campbell won his second bracelet of the summer in WSOP week 5.

His third cash of the summer was a win, as was his seventh. Last week alone, Australia's Robert Campbell notched four cashes that included two final tables and his second bracelet of the series. That qualifies him for our World Series of Poker Week 5 Player of the Week, sponsored by Global Poker.

Red-hot Summer

Campbell, a regular at the WSOP since 2015, won his first bracelet in Week 3, overtaking a field of 467 and defeating David Bach heads up in Event #33: $1,500 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw. That one earned him $144,027 — and he didn't stop there.

The mixed-game grinder started Week 5 of the series with a final table appearance where he finished in seventh place in $1,500 Razz for $12,837. But he was only heating up. He proceeded to cash in two more $1,500 non-hold'em events in 63rd and 101st — Event #60: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better and Event #63: $1,500 Omaha Mix, respectively. Then came bracelet No. 2.

Most poker players dream of winning one bracelet in a summer, but most couldn't fathom collecting two pieces of poker's most illustrious trophies in one WSOP. Campbell joins an exclusive group of players who have done just that and became the first player of the 2019 WSOP to win multiple bracelets.

"I was really excited to come to Vegas, much more excited than I had been in the past.”

His second victory came in a bigger event, this time taking down Event #67: $10,000 Stud Hi-Lo Championship, beating out a field of 151 players and defeating a WSOP legend in Yueqi Zhu heads up to collect $385,763.

On his road to victory, the rungood was real for Campbell, who put some coolers on Zhu to help him close it out. He told PokerNews live reporters after his second victory that he ran "more than pure."

“Whatever that next phase is after pure. It was really sick. I felt like 'Holy f***ing s**t man, he just got barbecued, that poor man.' It was outrageous. Even when I thought I lost, I won. That's how sick I ran.”

A Summer to Remember

As we enter the final two weeks of the 50th annual WSOP, Campbell has already had a career-making unforgettable summer, and he attributes it in part to a step back from poker that led to some increased motivation.

“I had probably played less poker [coming into the summer] than I've ever played, and I felt really really excited to play," Campbell said. "I was really excited to come to Vegas, much more excited than I had been in the past.”

That excitement has translated into a summer he won't soon forget, and has also put him atop the WSOP Player of the Year race. With 3,079.31 points, he now sits ahead of Dan Zack and Phillip Hui who have 2,920.76 points and 2,830.68 points, respectively.

Robert Campbell
Robert Campbell propelled himself into POY lead with second win of the summer.

With the $10,000 Main Event now underway with Day 1 starting flights, and more than 20 more bracelets up for grabs before the series comes to a close, Campbell still has time to test the heater and make it three. Campbell would be happy to become the reigning WSOP POY, and would like to replace fellow Australian and 2009 POY Jeffrey Lisandro.

“As long as they put my picture directly over Jeff Lisandro's, it will be really good,” Campbell joked about the possibility of winning POY. “That’s what I'd want to be done. Just straight over the top.”

The $10,000 Main Event is now underway as the World Series of Poker action continues at the Rio Las Vegas. Get all the updates right here at PokerNews. Join Global Poker now and play for real cash prizes!
