One Last Hand

Felipe Ramos parts with most of his stack
Felipe Ramos parts with most of his stack

While the rest of the room was waiting for hand-for-hand play to begin, Table 6 was holding up the works with a big one in progress.

It began with Felipe Ramos opening to 9,000, and he found calls in three places including Vincenzo Giannelli on the button. The flop brought {4-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {6-Clubs}, and Ramos continued out with another 13,000. Giannelli was the only caller now, and it was heads up to the {Q-Hearts} turn. Ramos asked his opponent how much he was playing (just less than 160,000 behind), then made a bet of 20,000. Giannelli called once again.

The {7-Spades} completed the board, and Ramos was first to act. He and Giannelli were close in chips, and Ramos announced his shove all in. Giannelli had 137,500 chips left now, and he spent just a few seconds making sure before announcing the big call for his own tournament life. He showed up {4-Hearts} {5-Hearts}, and Ramos sunk in his chair.

We never got to see what the man from São Paulo held. After mucking and paying off his debt, Ramos is left with just 7,000 lonely chips and a frown that is not going anywhere for now.

Brenes and the Big Stick

Humberto Brenes on Day 1
Humberto Brenes on Day 1

Humberto Brenes opened the pot to 11,000 from early position, and a player across the table three-bet shoved for 43,000 total. It was about half Brenes' remaining stack, and he cut out the call, squeaked the tongue out of his rubber shark, placed it atop the chips, and pushed it forward into the pot. His opponent was at risk, and it was a flip.

Showdown
Brenes: {A-Diamonds} {K-Spades}
Opponent: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Spades}

"Who is de king?" Brenes asked rhetorically. (A: Humberto is de king.) He then turned his attention to Mr. Opponent, making several loud comments about his garrote (stick) and drawing loud laughs from everyone nearby. Part of the meaning was lost on our admittedly poor Spanish, but we know a good dick joke when we hear one.

The {Q-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} flop was a bad start for Brenes, and he scolded the dealer, using the word garrote several more times as he puffed out his chest and sweated the last two cards. The {J-Clubs} on the turn opened up four outs for Brenes with one to come, and he was more than content to go runner-runner for the win. He asked for the ten, and the dealer obliged him with the {10-Spades} on fifth street to make his Broadway.

With one swing of his garrote, Brenes has sent another player to the rail, upping his count to about 125,000 and putting the field one elimination away from the bubble.

Breaking Things

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante

The board shows 52 players left, and it's time for a break. Four levels are behind us, and the money bubble is very near at hand. We'll be back in 15 minutes to see what we can do about that.

Negreanu and Fox Talk Linsanity

A snapshot of the headline that was run on ESPN Mobile
A snapshot of the headline that was run on ESPN Mobile

if you've got a pulse, you've probably heard about "Linsanity" or in other words, the buzz that New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin has created over the past couple of weeks in the NBA.

Elio Fox is wearing a New York Knicks hat and seated across from Daniel Negreanu. The two just spent several minutes talking a bit about the basketball star and how he's doing in the league lately, also about all the buzz he's created around the world, even with the not-so-avid NBA fan. They also touched on the recent controversial headline from ESPN that has blown up with over social media outlets.

After the Knicks' recent loss, an article headline read, "Chink In the Armor" with a leading picture of Lin battling for a loose ball after one of his nine turnovers against the New Orleans Hornets. The headline was quickly removed within an hour of its appearance, but the damage had been done. Although Fox didn't know about the headline, he was just as surprised that it was published as Negreanu was when he first got word of it.

Even in poker all the way down in Brazil, Linsanity has made its mark. And who would've thought an undrafted player out of Harvard would've ever made that much of an impact.

Shark chips
Shark chips

Elio Fox has been keeping his composure admirably despite what must be a frustrating day for him. Just a moment ago, we watched him drop another pot, this one at the hands of Humberto Brenes and his rubber, red-tongued shark.

Brenes was the preflop raiser, making it 6,200 under the gun, and Fox three-bet to 12,700 in position. When it came back around to Brenes, he counted down his stack of 38,700 and slid the rest of it all into the middle. Fox snapped, and the cards were on their backs. Aces versus kings, anyone?

Showdown
Brenes: {A-Clubs} {A-Spades}
Fox: {K-Clubs} {K-Hearts}

There was no sweat for Brenes as the board ran out clean: {6-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} {10-Clubs}.

Fox's kings were second-best the whole way, and he's going to have to pay off another debt. This one will cost him all but 55,000 chips, and he's got that remainder with which to try and mount a comeback.

Brenes, on the other hand, is up around 85,000 after that much-needed double.

More Chips for Negreanu

Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu just collected some more chips to pile on top of his mountain. This time he took them off of Caio Cesar Pimenta.

Action folded to Pimenta in the hijack seat and he raised to 7,500. Negreanu made the call on the button and everyone else folded to bring the two players to the {Q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} flop. On the flop, Pimenta bet 8,500 and Negreanu called.

The turn was the {A-Diamonds} and Pimenta checked. Negreanu reached for chips and fired out 21,000. Pimenta made the call.

The {10-Hearts} paired the board on the river and Pimenta checked to Negreanu again. Negreanu bet 56,200 and Pimenta went into the tank. After a minute or two, Pimenta folded and Negreanu won the pot.

After the hand, the two conversed a little bit. Pimenta hinted towards the fact that he held {A-}{K-} in the hand while Negreanu said he had exactly the {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}.

Gazes Eliminated by Mahoney

Bill Gazes (Day 1)
Bill Gazes (Day 1)

Bill Gazes was just eliminated a the hands of Patrick Mahoney in a blind-versus-blind situation. Mahoney was kind enough to tell us the gist of what happened.

In the small blind, Mahoney made it 7,500 to go and then Gazes reraised from the big blind to 20,000. Mahoney moved all in for "40 big blinds, effectively" and Gazes called off his stack with two jacks. Mahoney held {A-}{9-}.

Mahoney flopped an ace, but had to fade a heart draw that Gazes had. He did so and sent Gazes to the rail. Mahoney's now up to about 325,000 in chips.
