Many notable players found large bags for Day 2, including Brian Rast (195,000), Adam Friedman (188,000), and Robert Mizrachi (184,000).

Some who were less fortunate and did not bag include Scotty Nguyen, Josh Arieh, Brad Ruben, Mori Eskandani, and Kevin Gerhart.

Defending champion Ryutaro Suzuki survived the day and bagged 34,500. The 2021 champion of the inaugural edition of this event, Nicholas Julia, bagged 78,500.

The Day’s Action

The event began small, with less than 100 players at the first shuffle. However, this number grew rapidly as many notable players and mixed-game enthusiasts joined in the action. A total of 379 players entered the event, narrowly eclipsing the 361 from last year.

The combination of big bet and limit games in this format created the possibility of massive pots from the first hand of the day. This was seen as early as Level 2 when David Arganian made a higher full house than Mark Gregorich in a hand of Pot-Limit Omaha and left the latter on fumes early in the day. Gregorich rebounded from this cooler but did not find a bag at day’s end.

As the blinds and limits increased, so did the action. In no game can the chips go into the middle faster than Pot-Limit Omaha. Warwick Mirzikinian was the beneficiary of a gigantic pot of over 165,000 chips all-in preflop. Mirzikinian’s QJ106 made a straight on the river as he raked in the largest pot of the day.

As the day progressed, some chip leaders began to emerge. Richard Ashby steadily built his stack throughout the day and kept his foot on the gas. Ashby hit a gutshot Broadway draw on seventh street in a massive hand of Seven-Card Stud to propel him into the chip lead. Ashby won his second bracelet last week in the $1,500 Seven Card Stud event. He'll fancy his chances of completing a hat-trick in a couple of days' time.

Play will resume in Level 13 with limits at 4,000/8,000 at 1 p.m. on June 21 in the Horseshoe Event Center. The returning 139 players will play another ten 60-minute levels with a 15-minute break every two hours, as well as a 60-minute dinner break after Level 18.

As always, stay tuned to PokerNews for continued coverage of Event #53: $3,000 Nine Game Mixed and all other live bracelet-awarding events at the 2024 World Series of Poker.

Mirzikinian Triples Up in Large Pot

Level 10
Warwick Mirzikinian
Warwick Mirzikinian

Pot-Limit Omaha

Somehow, the stacks of Kristopher Tong, Eric Wasserson and Warwick Mirzikinian went into the middle of the table with the latter being the shortest stack of 55,900. He even declared that he was just looking to gamble, with both Wasserson and especially Tong happy to oblige.

Warwick Mirzikinian: QJ106
Eric Wasserson: Q986
Kristopher Tong: AA43

The board ran out Q1092K and Mirzikinian tripled up with his straight while Wasserson doubled through Tong for 22,600.

"That's how you do it, Vlad," Mirzikinian said. Apparently, he had arrived with a very short stack as mentioned by Peck, who then also asked "the re-entry period is over, right?"

Level 10
Gershon Distenfeld
Gershon Distenfeld

No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw

Philip Hui was all-in before the draw and looked up by table big stack Gershon Distenfeld. Both drew one and Distenfeld showed a 9x7x3x2x, but paired the seven. Hui was already ahead with the 9x6x4x2x and hit an ace to double.

Soon after, Brad Ruben was all-in before the draw against two opponents including Distenfeld. He discarded one and his 9x7x5x3x hit a king. The third player in the hand declared he hit a straight but Distenfeld had a ten to score the knockout.

A Friendly Slowroll Between Aussies

Level 8
Bruno Portaro
Bruno Portaro

Pot-Limit Omaha

On a flop of A75, Adam Friedman folded when Andrew Kelsall had three T-5,000 chips out in front. Before collecting the pot, Kelsall flashed the AK63.

One hand later, Bruno Portaro in the blinds popped it up to 2,500 with Friedman and Gary Benson on the button to call. Portaro led the A93 flop for 4,000 from the small blind, Friedman folded and Benson called.

They checked the Q turn and Portaro bet another 5,000 on the 3 river. Benson reluctantly called and Portaro showed the AKJ10 already. Benson studied his cards for a few seconds and first showed his AK before also exposing 108 as well.

"You slow roll me for a chop?" Portaro grinned and later added "nice hand Gary" after the pot was divided evenly between the two Aussies.

Stud Hi-Lo

Nitesh Rawtani: 72 / 38QJ / 10
Brian Hastings: KK / 326Q / 3

Nitesh Rawtani had previously lost most of his stack and was all-in for a small stack against Brian Hastings. They had already exposed the sixth street and Hastings peeled the final card first, in which he paired his trey to make two pair. Rawtani still had a shot at the low but the ten ended his run.

"Damn, I don't even know what to do now?" he asked the table and was told that the tournament offers one re-entry, so he may very well be back soon.

Level 6
Tamon Nakamura
Tamon Nakamura

No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw

Action was picked up on the first draw after Tamon Nakamura three-bet the button after a cutoff open. There was around 13,000 in the middle.

Both players drew one card.

The cutoff checked, and Nakamura jammed for 17,900. The cutoff went deep into the tank as he contemplated a call. He was a non-believer in the end and announced call.

Yingui Li bet a three-way flop of J97 flop to earn calls from two opponents including table chip leader Ariel Mantel. On the 7 turn, Li bet again for both to call and then bet the 3 on the river. Mantel folded and the third player in the hand tank-called with the words "jack is good".

Li tabled the KJ and the jack was indeed good.

2-7 Triple Draw

Fitoussi and Micon discarded the same amount on the second draw while Dzivielevski patted. Fitoussi checked, Dzivielevski bet and only Micon called.

Dzivielevski patted once more with Micon taking one and they checked. The Brazilian showed 9x6x5x4x2x and Micon open-mucked a bricked 8x7x5x2x draw.
