Event #40: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet

Day 3 Started

Second-Ever Mixed Big Bet Champ to Be Crowned Today at World Series of Poker

Scott Bohlman
Scott Bohlman

Introduced at 2017 WSOP, the inaugural $2,500 Mixed Big Bet event had a remarkable conclusion. One of the most feared online grinders Jens Lakemeier was crowned the champion after crushing the final table at an epic pace. He dropped to the bottom of the rankings only to double without a showdown. Then he single-handedly removed each of his last four opponents. Lakemeier was able to do that at the speed of light, reducing the field from five contenders down to a winner in a span of fewer than 20 hands.

It's time to see whether Lakemeier's successor to the throne can accomplish the same feat. While it may seem to be too hard to imitate, Scott Bohlman's outstanding run on Day 2 proves that anything is possible in the game of poker. Bohlman destroyed the middle stage of the Event #40: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet with remarkable dominance and navigated himself to an overwhelmingly advantageous stack ahead of the five-handed final day. He will unbag 1,556,000, well over four times what his nearest competitor will have.

Final table lineup and chip counts:

2Marcel VonkNetherlands100,000
3Aaron RogersUnited States261,800
4Daniel WeinmanUnited States292,800
5Ryan HughesUnited States345,500

Bohlman's goal can hardly be anything other than to bring home his first bracelet. He's already in possession of a stack that would be leading in a heads-up match. But the final tables can bring a wide range of narratives. Just as Lakemeier made it from the bottom to the top in 2017, there have been many examples of from-hero-to-zero at World Series.

Perhaps the best player to confirm that is Ryan Hughes, currently second on the leaderboard with 345,500. Hughes has already appeared on a 2018 WSOP final table. It was in the Mixed Omaha event where he pushed for his third gold. Hughes had over a third of all chips in play with eight players left only to eventually bow out in seventh.

With that in mind, Hughes and the other three shorter stacks in the Mixed Big Bet know that their respective tallies are far from over. Daniel Weinman (292,800), Aaron Rogers (261,800) and Marcel Vonk (100,000) will be tough to overcome. A double here and there could restore a more traditional way of chip spread and that's something Bohlman will be looking to fade in the pursuit of his first bracelet.

Find out whether Bohlman completes his cakewalk all the way to the top or if some of his rivals will be able to pull off a great comeback by joining us again at 2 p.m. local time as PokerNews will provide live updates from the five-handed final table until the winner steps to the throne.

Big O

Marcel Vonk raised to 20,000 on the button and Aaron Rogers made it 68,000 to go in the small blind. Daniel Weinman called in the big and Vonk shoved for 93,100. It went three ways to {4-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} and Rogers checked then tank-folded to a shove from Weinman.

Daniel Weinman: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}{4-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
Marcel Vonk: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{4-Spades}{6-Spades}

The two had very similar hands but the deuce of Weinman gave him a nut low draw and he got there right away as the {3-Spades} hit the turn. The {j-Diamonds} river gave both players jacks up on the high half so Vonk got quartered with Weinman making a handsome profit due to that plus Rogers' dead money.

No-Limit Hold'em

Scott Bohlman made it 25,000 in the cutoff and Marcel Vonk pushed all in for 50,100.

Bohlman joked, saying "how much is that?" with a laugh. He threw in calling chips right away.

Marcel Vonk: {A-Spades}{3-Spades}
Scott Bohlman: {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}

The {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} was great for Vonk but the {J-Spades} turn still gave some hopes to Bohlman. The river card, however, stood with Vonk as the {9-Hearts} completed the board to seal his double.

Bohlman Misses

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 3,000 ante

NL 2-7 Single Draw

Daniel Weinman opened for 20,000 in the cutoff and Scott Bohlman made it 85,000 in the small blind. Weinman called and patted after Bohlman drew one. Bohlman checked and Weinman said he had the "worst nine" as he flicked in {9-}{8-}{7-}{6-}{4-} but it was enough to win.

Rogers Fades All Outs in the World to Scoop Bohlman

Aaron Rogers

Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo

Scott Bohlman raised to 20,000 on the button and Aaron Rogers defended from the big.

They saw the {A-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} hit the felt and Rogers let Bohlman fire a 40,000-bet. Then Rogers moved all in for 120,300 and Bohlman immediately called.

Aaron Rogers: {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{2-Spades}
Scott Bohlman: {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}

Rogers flopped top two, but Bohlman had a monster two-way draw, having a wheel draw along with a flush draw.

The {10-Diamonds} turn was, however, a fantastic card for Rogers who already locked the high half with a boat.

"Do it!" he said, hoping for a high river card to scoop. And the dealer obliged, rolling out the {J-Clubs} and allowing Rogers to rake in the full pot.

Marcel Vonk Eliminated in 5th Place ($23,028)

NL Five-Card Draw

Daniel Weinman opened for 20,000 in the cutoff and Scott Bohlman called in the small blind. Marcel Vonk jammed in the big for 45,000 and Weinman called. Bohlman thought awhile and dropped in 220,000, getting a quick fold out of Weinman.

Bohlman tossed two and Vonk three and Bohlman revealed {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{a-Spades}. Vonk turned over {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}, needing a ton of help. Bohlman didn't improve but Vonk was dead after turning over {7-Clubs} and {j-Diamonds}.

"Nice play," Aaron Rogers said with a smile, referencing Bohlman's flat. "You did that pretty fast, too."

Hughes Doubles with a Rivered a Straight

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 3,000 ante

Pot-Limit Omaha

Ryan Hughes min-raised in the first position and Scott Bohlman re-raised pot on the button. Hughes called to see the {10-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} land on the flop.

Hughes checked, and Bohlman potted it again. Hughes was ready to go so they ended up all in and the cards went on their backs.

Ryan Hughes: {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Scott Bohlman: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{K-Spades}{4-Spades}

Hughes was trailing but he had a flush draw and a straight draw with two cards to come.

The {2-Spades} turn was a brick but the {8-Spades} river filled Hughes' straight and he scored a big double for 222,500.
