Cheong Making Choices

Earlier in the day, we told everyone that Joseph Cheong had registered in this tournament while waiting for the last remaining heads-up match to finish in the $5,000 Mixed-Max event.

The heads-up match was between Aubin Cazals and Warwick Mirzikinian and eventually Cazals overcame Mirzikinian — after a long nine hours of play. Cheong then left Event 9 to discuss with Cazals and the WSOP Tournament Directors what the plan was going to be for the final match for the bracelet. At this stage, Cheong and Cazals were wondering if he would be able to postpone the match for the bracelet until Tuesday, so he could therefore still take part in Day 2 of this event.

PokerNews Reporter Rich Ryan has given an explanation of how that discussion went down, right here. What we can tell you is that Cheong will have to play the heads-up match at 9:00 AM tomorrow. While this will most likely not give him enough time to finish the heads-up battle before Day 2 of this event starts, it was the only compromise that could be decided on.

It will be very interesting to see if Cheong now goes for boom or bust in this event. We will let you know if he starts getting a bit more active.

Boeree Scoops Most of a Big Pot

We found this table mid-action and the action happened rather quickly, so some of the exact amounts and details are missing. However, we found a short stacked player open by moving all in for roughly 2,350. Brock Parker moved all in over the top for 8,425. The player next to Parker folded and the next player to act decided to move all in over the top of Parker for an unknown amount.

Action folded to Liv Boeree on the button who had all of the players covered and called. The hands were exposed for the table:

Original Raiser: {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
Brock Parker: {A-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Late-Position Player: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Liv Boeree: {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}

Boeree retained her lead through the {3-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{10-Spades} flop and the {7-Spades} turn. However, the {2-Hearts} spiked on the river, awarding the original short stack player the best hand with a set of deuces. Parker and the late position player were eliminated this hand and Boeree was able to scoop a nice side pot from their eliminations. Boeree is now sitting on around 46,500.

Haxton Takes a Hit

Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

Over at Isaac Haxton's table a player in the hijack opened for 1,400. Haxton sitting in the cut off quickly raised and made it 3,100. A call was deposited in the middle and both players were witness to a {2-Spades}{8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop.

It was here that the hijack managed to get all in against Haxton. Haxton's {K-}{k-} looked to have a stranglehold on his opponent's {A-Spades}{4-Spades}, but a {7-Spades} on the turn brought a flush draw to the hijack. Haxton didn't have to worry about the flush though becaue a {A-} landed on the river forfeiting himself from the shortstack's chips.

JJ Runs Into Wheel

On a flop of {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}{A-Diamonds}, a player checked to chip leader and five-time bracelet winner John Juanda. Juanda fired out a bet of 1,350 and his opponent called.

Fourth street came the {3-Spades} and Juanda's opponent checked for a second time. Juanda continued with his aggression, betting 2,450. His opponent peeled one chip at a time off of his stack for a call.

The river brought the {4-Diamonds} and Juanda's opponent rapped the table once more. Juanda checked behind, allowing his opponent to table {A-Spades}{5-Diamonds} for a rivered straight. Juanda laughed and shook his head, showing the {A-Hearts} to the table. While this is a slight hit to JJ's stack, he is still sitting pretty with 67,500.

Good At Winning Flips

"Guess i'm just getting good at winning flips," said Matt Jarvis after the following hand played out.

A middle position player opened it up to 1,200 and Jarvis then three-bet shoved from the big blind. It was a total of 12,025 to the player and after some thought he tumbled in in his chip stack.

Jarvis: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Opponent: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

The flop was a very nice looking one for Jarvis, with the dealer spreading {a-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{a-Spades} along the felt. The {6-Clubs} on the turn changed nothing and the {6-Diamonds} on the river sealed the deal for Jarvis has he took the double.

Breaking the Bonding

We found Lars Bonding calling the all in of a short stacked player who moved his last 5,775 into the middle. The flop read {Q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{3-Spades} and Bonding held {Q-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for top pair. Bonding was outkicked by his opponent, however, who held {Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}.

The turn and river came {4-Hearts} and {9-Hearts} respectively, making Bonding's opponent's pair of queens with a ten kicker the best hand. Bonding is now down to roughly 17,500.

Dunst Back in the Mix

Tony Dunst has managed to gain some much needed chips and it's all because of arguably the prettiest hand in the game - {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}, rivaled in beauty by perhaps only two black aces.

When we arrived at the table there was already a flop showing {4-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and Dunst already had all his chips out in front of him. His one opponent eventually opted to call and turned over {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}. When the turn and river bricked Dunst's hand was strong enough to take down the double-up as he now sits with a healthy stack.
