Sometimes it's hard not to be results-oriented in poker. Joseph Cheong is probably spending his last few moments of Day 6 thinking about what might have been. He was in the big blind for a recent hand in which Michael Wywrot opened the button for 70,000. The small blind, Jerry Payne, then moved all in from the small blind for 930,000. Cheong looked down at , considered his action, and then called Cheong's re-raise.
The action came back to Wywrot who, like Cheong, was more than 6.0 million chips deep. He made a huge four-bet, instantly getting Cheong to lay down his hand. Wywrot then opened for a battle against Payne's .
"Well, I'm a 2-to-1 dog but I have a chance to triple up," Payne said to a friend on the rail. That chance was looking more remote after Payne missed the flop -- a flop, incidentally, that would have given Cheong top set. Payne then spiked a king on the turn, , and held on with a blank on the river. He tripled up to about 3.0 million, while Cheong and Wywrot each took a hit.
Bryn Kenney raised to 110,000 from middle position. Matthew Berkey called from the button and the flop came down . Kenney checked and Berkey fired 135,000. Kenney made the call.
The turn brought the and Kenney check-called another bet. This time the wager was worth 375,000 from Berkey.
The river completed the board with the and both players checked. Kenney tabled the for a pair of sixes and Berkey mucked.
Kenney moved up to 4.05 million while Berkey dropped to 3.7 million.
Richard Morgan's buddies on the rail got a little bit excited as their main man just found a big double up through Evgeny Shnayder.
Morgan had to do it the hard way as he was all in preflop with against the of Shnayder. However the board was spread to give Morgan the two-outer for the double up. His rail yelled with delight (and understandably so) as he's now up to 1.94 million with Shnayder back down to 4.3 million.
James Manning was down to his last 535,000 when he open-pushed all in from middle position. It folded around to Edward Ochana in the small blind who made the call, and the big blind got out. Cards on their backs…
Ochana
Manning
Manning needed a jack. And he got a couple, as the community cards came . Manning moves to around 1.14 million. Ochana is still up there with 5.5 million.
Another pre-flop all-in has resulted in another elimination. The victim this time is Jacob Tyler, whose fell to John Armbrust's on a board of . Each player made aces and nines, but Armbrust's king kicker proved strongest. He collected 615,000 chips from Tyler, ending Tyler's Main Event run.
Ronnie Bardah just announced that if he makes the final table, he'll do the moonwalk around the Rio naked. Seeing that we've now written it up, it'll be hard for Bardah to get out of this one if it happens.
"This is how my day started," said Gabriel Nassif. "Ace-queen of hearts." Nassif had open-shoved for 650,000 from the small blind and was called by Matt Affleck from the big blind. Affleck showed down . Affleck was drawing dead by the turn on a board of . He fell to 6.0 million in chips while Nassif now has about 1.35 million.
We caught the action on the turn with the board reading . Damien Luis led out for 285,000 and Pejmanpatric Eskandar made the call before the completed the board on the river.
Luis fired again for 350,000 but Eskandar responded with a raise of an additional 700,000. Luis made the call and showed , but it wasn't enough as Eskandar showed a slow-played set with .
Luis is down to 2.05 million with Eskandar up to 4.9 million.
Hasan Habib hasn't been too active all day long, but when he raised to 110,000 from early position, no one seemed to respect that. His raise was called by four players. Gabriel Alarie called in the cutoff seat, Edward Ochana called from the button, Matthew Berkey from the small blind and Meenaskshi Subramaniam from the big blind.
The flop came down and all it took was a bet of 225,000 from Habib for everyone to fold. He chipped up to 1.5 million.
