Early Sightings

David Sklansky, Arnold Spee, Ayaz Mahmood, Jason Somerville, J.C. Tran, Isabelle Mercier, Joe Tehan, and David Williams' mother, Shirley, have all chosen today as their preferred start day.

Shawn Buchanan Out

And as so often happens with an early elimination it was a cooler that sent Shawn Buchanan out of the Main Event. With the board reading {J-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} {2-Spades} Buchanan bet and his opponent moved all in for her last 12,975. Buchanan thought it over and reluctantly made the call, and found that his set of sevens were beaten by her set of jacks. That left him with just 300 chips, which he lost on the next hand when his {K-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} ran into {K-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} and he didn't catch a ten.

No Song, No Dance

There was no serenade for the players in the Brasilia Room--they were briskly ordered to their seats and soon after that cards were in the air. Among those in today's field are Issac Haxton, Mike Wattel, Shawn Buchanan, James Akenhead, Matt McCullough, Jameson Painter, and Dmitri Nobles.

Have Seats, Need Players

The Red section here in the Amazon room currently has five tables completely empty, each with a stack of chips for prospective players. Harrah's is keeping these tables open for when players register today.

Players have until the end of the second level, which is actually four hours into the tournament, to register.

Shuffle Up and Deal

After the usual reminders regarding not taking chips off the table, avoiding excessive celebration, and other rules of play, country recording star Andy Griggs came on to perform his new song "It's All About the Money," accompanying himself on acoustic guitar.

"Contrary to that song, it's all about the bracelet, too... and tradition," said WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. He then introduced a new WSOP tradition, the awarding of final table jackets to everyone who made a final table at this summer's series.

Tournament Director Jack Effel ended the preliminaries by following another tradition, ordering the dealers to "Shuffle up and deal!"

Day 1c Begins at Noon

The third of four opening sessions begins at noon at the Rio, as action begins again in Event 54, the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em World Championship. Each of the first two days' play have seen the starting fields trimmed roughly by half, and with five more two-hour sessions in store for today's 1c starters, the same ratio should occur. What isn't known, is how much larger the Day 1c and 1d sessions will be compared to the 2,400+ who showed up for the combined first two days.

As always, PokerNews will be here with extensive coverage from the floor of the Amazon Room.
