Celebrity Poker Showdown

Sully Erna (left) checks the payout sheet while sitting next to Tobey Maguire
At Table #2, the random draw has moved actor Tobey Maguire (best known for playing Spiderman) to the immediate left of Sully Erna, the lead singer for Godsmack. Most celebrities bust from the Main Event long before the money bubble, so it's particularly unusual that these two would find themselves seated next to each other so close to the dinner break on Day 3.

Both Maguire and Erna have played the Main Event the past few years, and occasional other events. Maguire reached the final table of the first-ever Bellagio Cup in the summer of 2005, before it was turned into a televised WPT event.

"The Matador" Wins Without a Showdown

Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen
Action folded around to Carlos Mortensen in the cutoff seat who raised to 13,000. Joe Pharo made the call from the small blind and the two took a flop heads up...

{A-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}

Pharo checked dark and Mortensen fired out 25,000. Pharo raised to 55,000 and Carlos pondered a bit. Eventually Mortensen silenty pushed out a raise making it 85,000 to see the turn. Pharo called and the turn brought the {6-Diamonds}. Pharo checked and Mortensen bet 90,000. Pharo thought the better of it and tossed his cards in. Carlos "The Matador" Mortensen stacked the pot and is very much in the mix with 510,000.

Jon Kalmar raises to 15,000 and Tony Hachem moves all in for 42,000. Kalmar makes the call and opens {6-Clubs}{7-Clubs} Hachem has {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}.

The flop comes {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} giving Kalmar a world of outs and he hits his straight on the turn when the {9-Hearts} hits. The river is the {3-Hearts} and Tony starts celebrating. With a second glance at the board, he quickly realizes his Series has come to a conclusion.

Kenny Tran Bluffs His Way to a Monster Pot

Darrell "Gigabet" Dicken raised to 17,000 and Kenny Tran called from the button. The flop was {A-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades} and both players checked. The tun was the {10-Spades}. Dicken bet 25,000, Tran raised to 96,000 and Dicken called. The river was the {J-Clubs}. Dicken checked, Tran bet 160,000 and Dicken folded.

Tran showed {7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for a stone cold bluff and raked in the monster pot. After the hand, he was back up over 1,000,000 chips.

Refund Not Necessary

Ken Webster from Day 2a
Ken Webster from Day 2a
After a player in early position raised to 14,000 Kirk Morrison called in the cutoff, and Ken Webster then moved all-in for a total of 57K. The original raiser called and Morrison took a long time to think things through. "Do you have Ace-Queen?" Morrison asked, before making the call. Webster turned over {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} and Morrison pulled back his chips and said, "I think I want my money back."

Of course, heh heh, you can't change your mind like that Morrison tabled his {7-Spades}{4-Spades}. The two players saw an {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} flop that did nothing to help Morrison's hand...but the {7-Clubs} hit on the turn and the {4-Diamonds} on the river to deliver a brutal beat to Webster than sent him out of the Main Event. Morrison now has 445,000.

Cory Carroll Busts a Player

After a flop of {J-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}, the big blind checks, Cory Carroll bets 20,000, the big blind moves all in for about 56,000, and Carroll immediately calls with {J-Spades}{9-Diamonds} for two pair. The big blind shows {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for an open-ended straight draw, and he'll need to improve to survive.

The last two cards are {A-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, and Carroll's two pair holds up to win the pot. The big blind is eliminated.
