KM Tops Day 1a in Pretoria; Solomons and Ah-Nien Among the Survivors

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Banks Solomons

The August edition of the 2024 SunBet Poker Tour in Pretoria has seen the first of five starting days conclude in the ZAR15,000 Main Event. Compared to the previous edition at the same venue in March, it was a timid start for the crown jewel of the schedule as just 65 entries were recorded compared to the 105 entries in Spring. Most notables of the close-knit South African poker community were still involved on Day 2 of the ZAR50,000 High Roller, which had also seen a drop in participation as well.

With 15 levels of 50 minutes each or down to the top 15% of the field set as goal, the latter was reached in the final level of the night and 10 players advanced. Leading the way in the early morning hours at the Time Square Casino Pretoria was local player KM, who turned his 40,000 starting stack into 519,000. There is already a significant gap to Banks Solomons (310,000) and Quintin Heather-Clark (292,000), who complete the overnight podium.

Harold Brooks finished just a single chip behind the bronze spot with 291,000 and was responsible for the final elimination of the night when he won a flip against Mariette Language. Of the ten players to advance were nine from South Africa, while Patrice Ah-Nien made it through with 212,000 in chips. Ah-Nien is part of a small travelling player group from Mauritius and cashed in this event in March, finishing in 30th place for ZAR29,390.

Alvin Pillay reached the final three tables in the previous stop here in Pretoria and also needed just one entry to secure his spot for Day 2 in the opening flight, as he bagged up 183,000. The same was not the case for Gareth Kalil, who finished in 8th place back in March as he ran with kings into aces to bow out in the penultimate level. His sister Melissa Kalil fared batter and advanced with 258,000.

Other notable casualties throughout Day 1a were Hennie Appel, Darren Kramer, Okkie Fourie, Huawei Sun, Menesh Keshav, and Stephen Courtney. The previous champion Sugen Singh was also unable to get through on the first bullet but won another shot in the evening satellite, so he will be back for sure to try and win another SunBet Poker Tour title.

The live poker series in South Africa takes place in cooperation between the Monster Jam Poker Tour (MJPT) and Sun International, one of the leading Hotels, Gaming and Entertainment Group operators in the country. Another four starting days are scheduled for the ZAR15,000 Main Event, which boasts a ZAR4,000,000 guarantee.

Stay tuned for more live poker action from South Africa right here on PokerNews, as the next winner of the SPT will be crowned on Sunday, August 11, 2024.

Mariette Language
Mariette Language

Harold Brooks raised to 18,000 from under the gun and he then called the shove by Mariette Language for just 56,000 from the very next seat.

Mariette Language: 55 All in
Harold Brooks: J9

The Q92 flop instantly improved Brooks to the superior pair and nothing changed with the A turn. Down to the last two outs, Language could not get there with the J river and departed in 11th place.

With 22:53 minutes left in the final level of the night, Day 1a has concluded. Full counts and a recap of today's action are to follow.

Cruel Exit for Kalil

Level 14 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Gareth Kalil
Gareth Kalil

Gareth Kalil raised to 13,000 in the cutoff and Patrice Ah-Nien three-bet to 30,000 in the big blind. The initial raiser declared another raise and first pushed forward the 30,000. He then added another 42,000 on top and called all-in for around 120,000 when Ah-Nien pushed.

Gareth Kalil: KK All in
Patrice Ah-Nien: AA

The dire setup brought no help to Kalil on a board of 107627 and last year's final tablist exited in 12th place. Shortly after, the last 11 remaining players went on another 15-minute break. They will play another full level or until one more of them runs out of chips.

Hennie Appel
Hennie Appel

Alvin Pillay raised to 14,000, then got out of the way when Hennie Appel jammed the cutoff for 125,000 and Banks Solomons called on the button. "I would have had a decision," Pillay said as he mucked the AJ face-up.

Banks Solomons: JJ

None of the two remaining aces came on the 109247 runout to reduce the field to the last 12 contenders.

Steenkamp and Blom No More

Level 12 : Blinds 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Wesley Blom
Wesley Blom

Derrick Steenkamp finally found a spot to get his short stack into the middle with the A2 only to run into the KK of Alvin Pillay. The 943 flop gave Steenkamp more outs with the wheel draw but he came up short on the 10 turn as well as 9 river runout.

In the last hand before the break at the very same table, Wesley Blom raised to 7,500. Harold Brooks three-bet to 22,500 and Mariette Language then four-bet behind. Blom called all-in and Brooks folded, flashing the 88 in the process.

Wesley Blom: AJ All in
Mariette Language: AA

"Black cards please," Blom requested and two came with the 832 flop, on which Brooks would have hit a set. The J turn gave Blom some thin hope but the 7 river ended his run a few spots shy of Day 2 as well.

Grave Exit for Grove; Appel Gets Lucky

Level 12 : Blinds 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Sheldon Grove
Sheldon Grove

Sheldon Grove called all-in when Wesley Wiegand in the small blind jammed the K953 turn and both players had nearly identical stack sizes behind.

Sheldon Grove: K10 All in
Wesley Wiegand: A7

The river brought the 5 and Wiegand improved to a flush. Both stacks were counted and the 71,000 of Wiegand covered by a few big blinds.

At the same time one table over, the cards and board were already exposed. Hennie Appel in an early position had flopped two pair with 107 to crack the QQ of Melissa Kalil in the big blind. The board had come 107365 and other players at the table pointed out how lucky the double was.

"What? I had top two pair, I am not going to fold," Appel replied.

"You got it in pre," Wesley Blom added ... and Appel countered that with a big grin and "but if you know it's gonna come ...".

Kramer Eliminated by Wiegand

Darren Kramer
Darren Kramer

Darren Kramer pushed his short stack from the button with the A4 and was looked up by Wesley Wiegand in the big blind with the A5.

While a split pot was likely, the poker gods had other plans as Wiegand paired up on the K965 turn. Kramer needed another diamond to chop but the 8 river sent him to the rail.

Blom Celebrates a Double

Wesley Blom
Wesley Blom

With the completed board showing Q32KQ, Mariette Language pushed forward her stack of T-5,000 chips out of the big blind. Wesley Blom called all-in on the button for 55,500 and scored a double with the 33, as Language had only rivered trips queens with the Q10.

Blom celebrated vividly and then inquired "I played it like a magician, correct?" Language could all but grin as she took yet another setback to her stack.

Juma Flips Into a Big Stack

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

Table six had lost Anders Hellstrom only a few minutes ago and another big pot was brewing soon after. Hafiz Juma and Wesley Wiegand flipped for a large pot worth around six starting stacks in the following showdown.

Hafiz Juma: QQ All in
Wesley Wiegand: AK

No ace or king came on the J92310 runout and Juma doubled for 121,400. Wiegand dropped back to the starting stack while Rex Hsu was then eliminated by KM on the same table.

Van Blerk and Poonhath Eliminated

Level 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Kyle van Blerk
Kyle van Blerk

Alvin Pillay raised to 3,400 in the hijack and called the shove by Kyle van Blerk in the big blind for 19,500 after short consideration.

Kyle van Blerk: KJ All in
Alvin Pillay: QJ

"You are ahead," Pillay had said when van Blerk got out of his seat immediately. That still remained to be the case on the 642 flop but Pillay took the lead with the Q turn. The river was a blank A and satellite qualifier van Blerk was eliminated.

At almost the same time one table over, Harold Brooks sent Rajeev Poonhath to the rail as well. Before the dinner break, Brooks had declared that they were playing "donkey poker" on the table. His 65 had flopped an open-ender and turned a straight on K748 to crack the QQ of Poonhath to reduce the field by one more hopeful.
