Astedt Among the Big Stacks After Day 1 of the $10,300 WCOOP Main Event

Level 15 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 1,250 ante
Niklas Åstedt

There were 511 brave souls who put up the $10,300 it cost to enter WCOOP 98-H: NLHE [World Championship of NLHE/Main Event], and when the dust settled, just 176 of them bagged a stack for Day 2. The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) flagship event attracted the best of the best, but in the end, a relatively unknown top ten formed.

Sitting on top of the leaderboard is Brazil’s "BRzRoll", who amassed a whopping 2,379,612 chips, good for nearly 200 big blinds at the start of Day 2, on Day 1 of the WCOOP Main Event and is the only player to take more than two million chips into Day 2. The international top three is completed by Tom "7tHEcROw7" MacDonald from the United Kingdom in second place with 1,927,103 in chips and Austria’s "P0KERPR02.0", who bagged 1,821,748 chips for third place.

However, if there is one name that stands out in the top ten chip counts, it is that of Niklas "Lena900" Astedt. The online phenom obtained 1,731,822 chips throughout the day, which sets him in seventh place in the overall standings. No stranger to the highest stakes that online poker has to offer, the Swede will have a comfortable position when Day 2 commences in search of a new WCOOP title to add to his collection.

A WCOOP Main Event befits a turnout full of poker’s online and live legends, and this year did not disappoint. Among the ones that managed to bag a seven-figure stack are Felipe "ketzerfelipe" Ketzer (1,415,554), Simon "C. Darwin2" Mattsson (1,372,243) Roman "RomeOpro" Romanovsky (1,308,482), Sam "Str8$$$Homey" Greenwood (1,205,315), and Linus “LLinusLLove” Loeliger (1,012,641)

Less fortunate were Ami "UhhMee" Barer (226,674), Rui "RuiNF" Ferreira (178,770) and "ShipitFTW911" (131,788). They will all start Day 2 with less than the 250,000 starting stack, but will still have plenty to play with, with the deep structure that a WCOOP Main Event provides.

The PokerStars Team Pros also came out in full force, but only three of the Red Spades survived the day. Rafael "GM_VALTER" Moraes bagged the biggest of them all with 1,320,974, while Sam "SamSquid" Grafton is not far behind with 1,279,765 in chips. Meanwhile, Laurie "LaliTournier" Tournier is sitting at the bottom regions of the leaderboard with a stack of 185,000, trailing far behind her peers. However, Ramon "RamonColillas" Colillas, Alejandro "[Papo]AR" Lococo, Lex "L. Veldhuis" Veldhuis and Parker "tonkaaaa" Talbot, as well as any ambassadors that have not tried their luck yet, still have a chance to make an appearance before the late registration closes at the start of Day 2.

The same can not be said for Mike "SirWatts" Watson, Samuel "€urop€an" Vousden, Jans "Graftekkel" Arends, David "MissOracle" Yan, and Michael "imluckbox" Addamo. All of them burned through their initial entry as well as three reentries on Day 1, the maximum allowed. They will have to wait another year to have hopes of becoming the World Champion of Online Poker.

As mentioned earlier, the late registration is still open until the start of day 2 on Monday, October 2nd at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Those who decide to join the fray at the last moment will receive the starting stack of 250,000 chips and play will begin in Level 16: 6,000/12,000 with an ante of 1,500. Day 2 will then play on until 40 players remain, at which point the field will be well into the money.

PokerNews will of course be present to deliver all of the action from one of the biggest online poker tournaments of the year live as it happens, so stay tuned tomorrow for all the big hands from your favorite players.

Roman "Gogac sniper" Hrabec raised to 16,000 from middle position and Niklas "Lena900" Astedt obliged with a call from the hijack. "Uki.KRK" was waiting on the button and put in a three-bet to 84,000 once the action had folded to them. Hrabec quickly got out of the way, but Astedt put in one more raise to put his opponent all-in for their 252,190 chips.

"Uki.KRK" made the call and the players were off to the races.

Sergi "srxakgirona" Reixach raised to 17,600 and "fichtner3000" was the only caller from the hijack. The KQ5 flop saw Reixach check and "fichtner3000" put out a bet of 24,000 in response. Reixach then raised to 72,000 and "fichtner3000" called.

On the 8 turn, Reixach continued betting, this time for 130,960. "fichtner3000" responded with a minimum raise to 261,920 before Reixach put in his entire stack of 392,103, which "fichtner3000" called.

The 8 river paired the board and thus failed to improve Reixach, resulting in his elimination. Meanwhile, "fichtner3000" won a large pot which saw them be the first to have more than 2,000,000 chips in the 2023 WCOOP Main Event.

Felipe "ketzerfelipe" Ketzer started off with a raise to 10,000 from under the gun. Alejandro "[Papo]AR" Lococo then three-bet to 32,500 from the cutoff before Aliaksei "ale6ka" Boika came in with a cold four-bet to 67,500 from the button.

Ketzer folded, but Lococo clicked it back to 105,000 before Boika finally six-bet jammed for 255,910. Lococo made the call with the covering stack and the two were off to the races.

Parker Talbot
Parker Talbot

Thiago "KKremate" Crema opened the action with a raise to 11,250 from the cutoff. Parker "tonkaaaa" Talbot sat in the small blind and made a three-bet to 37,500, which Crema four-bet all-in for 152,747, Talbot's stack, effectively. Talbot made the call and their holdings were revealed.

It was a bad situation for Talbot, which got even worse when Crema flopped a set on 3K9. The 9 turn left the PokerStars Ambassador with no outs, and he could start deciding whether to fire a reentry when the 8 river completed the board.

Grafton Like a Fish in the Water on His Second Bullet

Level 9 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Sam Grafton
Sam Grafton

Sam "SamSquid" Grafton had already more than doubled his starting stack on his second bullet when raised to 8,800 from under the gun. Christoph "26071985" Vogelsang sat next to him and made the call before Connor "blanconegro" Drinan three-bet all-in for 114,198 from the big blind.

Grafton made the call and Vogelsang followed suit.

A flop of A3Q was put on the virtual felt, and Grafton put out a relatively tiny bet of 36,000 chips, which was enough to let Vogelsang lay his hand down and take the pot to a heads-up showdown.

Connor "blanconegro" Drinan: 1010
Sam "SamSquid" Grafton: KK

Grafton had a massive lead with his kings, and they would remain the best cards on the 26 runout. Drinan was forced to leave the table while Grafton surged to the top ranks of the leaderboard.

Marques Seizes Chip Lead in Huge Clash with Vousden
Marques Seizes Chip Lead in Huge Clash with Vousden

In the final hand of the previous level, Andre "PTFisherman23" Marques raised to 7,350 from under the gun and faced a three-bet from Samuel "€urop€an" Vousden in the hijack. The amount was 24,500 chips and Marques made the call.

The flop fanned out 5610 and Marques proceeded to check-call a 24,500 bet from Vousden. Vousden then upped the ante on the 2 turn to 105,000, close to a pot-sized bet. Marques opted to check-call again and the 2 river completed the board.

Marques checked for the third time and Vousden went all-in for 290,461. Marques dipped into his time bank, but eventually made the call, creating a pot of almost 900,000 chips.

Vousden showed K10 for two pair, but Marques' JJ narrowly beat it, resulting in Vousden's elimination and Marques securing the chip lead by a significant margin.
