Gregory Fournier Bags Chip Lead on Day 1b of EPT Main Event, Prize Pool Tops €8M

It's been a huge day at the PokerStars European Poker Tour Paris, with the Palais des Congres packed out with hopeful locals and returning champions alike and the battle very much on as the second and last starting flight of the EPT Paris Main Event played out.

A total of 1,054 entries were made on Day 1b, which brought the tally across both flights up to 1,661 — topping last year's event with late registration still open until the start of Day 2. As it stands, the prize pool has already breached the €8,000,000 mark.

After ten levels of action, 358 players bagged and tagged at the end of the night. Gregory Fournier of France stood at the top of the pile with 351,000 chips. He's a man on an upward trajectory following a cash in the WSOP Main Event last year and a first place finish in the France Poker Open.

Not too far behind was Gheorghe Fedorca with 310,500, another local player who's been locking up cashes around Paris and heads into Day 2 looking for his biggest score yet.

Ruida Lin of China rounds out the top three with 304,500, and all three of Day 1b's chip leaders have at least a touch more than Day 1a chip leader Eero Rantala, who bagged 299,000.

Of course, this being an EPT Main Event, tough competition stands between the current leaders and a top place finish. To name a few, Padraig O'Neil, who just months ago came first in the main event in Prague, is in the mix at the top end with a stack of 135,000. Benny Glaser has 180,000 and stood well positioned for a deep run. And Sergi Reixach stands in tenth place with 213,500.

Some of poker's greats also busted on Day 1b. After starting off strong and doubling up within a few hands, Dominik Nitsche hit the rail, as did Niklas Astedt who lost his stack shortly before the flight concluded. Representing Team Pro, Parker Talbot bagged chips, as did Sam Grafton, albeit both with stacks in need of a spin up.

When play resumes for Day 2, blind levels run for 90 minutes with a 20-minute break after every level and a 65-minute dinner break after level 4. Blinds start at 1,000/1,500/1,500.

Carvalho Wins Three-Way All-In

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Kim de Sousa Carvalho
Kim de Sousa Carvalho

Action was on the turn on a board of 278A. Nariman Yaghmai moved all in for 14,000, then Kim De Sousa Carvalho pushed all in for 33,000. Bekim Murtezi then moved all in over the top of them both with the biggest stack to make for a three-way all-in. Players flipped their cards.

Nariman Yaghmai: 109
Kim De Sousa Carvalho: 88
Bekim Murtezi: A7

Yaghmai was drawing to a straight and flush, Murtezi had two pair with aces and sevens, and Carvalho was out ahead with a set of eights.

Both of his opponents still had outs, but the river came a blank, the 4. Carvalho held to win the pot and near-triple his stack. Murtezi lost a chunk of chips, while Yaghmai was eliminated from the tournament.

Benny Glaser
Benny Glaser

Paul Vas Nunes opened to 2,500 from the cutoff and Benny Glaser three-bet to 8,000 on the button. Tomi Brouk then shoved for approximately 50,000 from the big blind, which got a fold from Vas Nunes and a snap-call from Glaser to put Brouk at risk.

Tomi Brouk: JJ
Benny Glaser: QQ

Glaser had Brouk pipped with his queens, and the 46355 runout came sweat-free for Glaser, who collected the rest of Brouk's chips.

Seire Tank-Calls Correctly

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

With around 35,000 in the middle to the Q9387 river, Casimir Seire had checked from under the gun. Yuhang Chen pushed all-in for what appeared to be 23,900 and Seire went deep into the tank without asking for an exact count.

Several minutes passed without any player calling the clock and Seire even apologised for taking so long, he then put the chips into the middle soon after.

Chen showed AJ for a bluff and Seire earned the knockout with the J7 for rivered fourth pair.

"That was a sick call," Rory Jennings said while Seire raked in the pot.

The action was caught as Marle Spragg was leaving the tournament floor and the pot was being awarded to opponent David Wintersberger. Both hands were tabled and the board had been run out as it read K67Q5.

Marle Spragg: A10
David Wintersberger: KxQx

Spragg's ace-high was no good against Wintersberger's king-queen which improved to top pair, sending Spragg to the rail.
