Facing Potential Criminal Charges, Chris Moneymaker Closes Kentucky Poker Room

Level 17 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Christopher Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

Chris Moneymaker has been forced to cease poker operations at his Kentucky card room, Moneymaker Social Club, following threats of criminal action from local authorities.

The poker room, located in Paducah, had just opened in September and had originally received approval from the then McCracken County Attorney Sam Clymer. But Clymer's replacement, Cade Foster, has reversed course on the decision to allow Moneymaker Social Club to continue spreading poker games.

Moneymaker, who potentially would have faced misdemeanor and felony charges related to illegal gambling — gambling is illegal in Kentucky — told PokerNews in an exclusive interview that will be available on this week's upcoming episode of the PokerNews Podcast what happened and what his plans are now with the business he invested hundreds of thousands to open less than a year ago.

"We've decided to pull out the poker tables and shut down the poker part of the business," Moneymaker said. "Actually, that's the biggest part of the business right now."

Nozomu and Nikiforov Ousted

Level 17 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante

Shimizu Nozomu shoved all in for 405,000 from under the gun and Jamil Wakil re-shoved all in on his left. The rest of the table folded and the two hands were tabled.

Shimizu Nozomu: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Jamil Wakil: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Wakil was in a dominating position and the flop of {k-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} put him even further ahead. The {10-Spades} on the turn gave Nozomu a few outs but the {9-Hearts} on the river was not one of them.

Next door, Ilya Nikiforov was all in for around 300,000 with {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} but was up against the big stack of Pedro Garagnani with {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}. The board ran out {10-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} and Nikiforov was also eliminated.

Jorryt van Hoof

Jorryt van Hoof pushed all in for his last 70,000 from under the gun and Jamil Wakil re-raised to 130,000 in the cutoff. Ren Lin four-bet shoved all in from the big blind and Wakil was forced to give up his hand.

Jorryt van Hoof: {k-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Ren Lin: {a-Clubs}{5-Spades}

The board ran out {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{10-Spades} to eliminate Van Hoof and bring the field down to just two tables. The final 16 players will now be hand-for-hand with just 15 places being paid.

Redraw of the Final Two Tables

Level 17 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante

Chidwick Survives on Fumes

Level 18 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante

With Stephen Chidwick all in for 15,000 from the big blind, Kayhan Mokri raised to 75,000 in middle position. The rest of the table folded and the two hands were tabled.

Stephen Chidwick: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Kayhan Mokri: {j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

The flop came {a-Spades}{8-Hearts}{2-Hearts} to put Chidwick well out front with a pair of aces. The {10-Clubs} on the turn provided a sweat but the {5-Spades} on the river secured the double-up for Chidwick.

Hissou Doubles; Lin Pulls Further Ahead

Level 18 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Ren Lin
Ren Lin

Ren Lin had raised for Pedro Garagnani to call and both checked the {j-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop. Garagnani bet the {4-Spades} turn for 80,000 and Lin called, which led them to the {10-Hearts} river. Garagnani bet another 160,000 and received a call to reveal the {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} for a bluff, as Lin earned the pot with {j-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}.

Over on the other table, the next bubble all-in saw Sirzat Hissou all-in via three-bet shove for 155,000 out of the big blind. Initial preflop raiser Kayhan Mokri had opened to 55,000 and called to put Hissou at risk on the cash prize bubble.

Sirzat Hissou: {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Kayhan Mokri: {3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}

The {10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{k-Spades}{6-Diamonds} board "almost" let the bubble burst, as exclaimed by Mokri with a smile on the face.

Another Double for Chidwick

Level 18 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante

Stephen Chidwick shipped all in for his last 30,000 from the cutoff and Kayhan Mokri didn't hesitate before calling from the big blind.

Stephen Chidwick: {k-Spades}{9-Diamonds}
Kayhan Mokri: {q-Clubs}{7-Spades}

The flop came {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and Chidwick flopped a pair with a flush draw. The {k-Hearts} on the turn locked it up for Chidwick who doubled up again but still remains the shortest stack.

Small Pots Only as Bubble Continues

Level 18 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante

Pedro Garagnani raised to 60,000 and the action folded to Mauricio Ferreira Pais on the button. The German three-bet to 240,000 and forced out the blinds as well as the initial raiser.

Over on the other table, Jamil Wakil opened to 55,000 and Bruno Volkmann defended the big blind. That led them to a {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{7-Spades} flop which prompted a check-fold to a continuation bet.

Seidel Eliminated on the Money Bubble

Level 18 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Pedro Garagnani opened to 50,000 in early position an was called by Erik Seidel on his left. The flop came {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and Garagnani checked to Seidel who bet 50,000. Garagnani check-raised all in and Seidel thought for a moment before calling off his stack of around 375,000.

Erik Seidel: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Pedro Garagnani: {a-Spades}{9-Hearts}

Seidel required some help in order to stay alive on the money bubble. The {a-Diamonds} on the turn improved Garagnani to a full house and Seidel was unable to catch up on the {k-Clubs} river.
