EPT12 Prague Main Event Day 1a: No One Bags Bigger Than Astapau

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Anton Astapau

Day 1a of the 2015 PokerStars.com EPT Season 12 Prague €5,300 Main Event saw 254 players take to the felt, but after eight 75-minute levels of play, 144 punched their ticket to Day 2, including EPT regular Anton Astapau, who leads the pack with 190,600 in chips.

Others to make it through the day were Ghattas Kortas (151,200), EPT11 Grand Final champ Adrian Mateos (150,200), Rainer Kempe (137,400), Donnacha O'Dea (72,400), and Byron Kaverman (67,900).

Of course not everyone was lucky enough to bad chips. World Series of Poker bracelet winner Craig McCorkell was the first elimination of the day after running kings into the pocket aces of Charlie Carrel in the first level. Before long, he has company on the rail including Pierre Neuville, who was fresh off his seventh-place finish in the 2015 WSOP Main Event; WSOP Millionaire Maker champ Jonathan Dimmig; 2014 WCOOP champ Fedor "CrownUpGuy" Holz; and WSOP Europe champ Kevin MacPhee.

Shortly before the dinner break, a big four-way hand went down that involved Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari and resulted in a double elimination.

It began when Antonio Costa Alfaia opened for 650 and [Removed:30], a former footballer for Crystal Palace FC, called from the hijack. The player on the button came along, Akkari did the same from the small blind, and a short-stacked Muzaffer Akin called from the big to make it five-way action to the {10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{9-Spades} flop.

Akkari checked, Akin shoved all in for 5,575, and Alfaia moved all in over the top for 12,875. Kebe thought for a moment before making the call, the players on the button folded, and Akkari hit the tank before also calling. Akkai and Kebe then checked the {7-Diamonds} turn, and then Akkari checked for a third time on the {Q-Spades} river. Kebe fired out 20,000, and Akkari thought for a bit before releasing the {2-Spades}{2-Clubs} for a flopped set.

Kebe then tabled the {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for the nuts, which of course bested the {9-}{4-} of Akin and {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts} of Alfaia.

Others who fell before the end of the day were Martin Finger, Dominik Nitsche, Dario Minieri, Davidi Kitai, Jonathan Little, Mustapha Kanit, and Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier.

On the flip side, some of the players who will return for Day 2 at Noon local time on Saturday are Charlie Carrel (120,500), Team PokerStars Pro Martin Hruby (58,200), Andre Akkari (34,600), and Liv Boeree (14,600), as well as Friend of PokerStars Natalie Hof (15,700)

Tomorrow, a whole new flight of players will visit the Hilton to take their shot at poker glory. Cards will be in the air at Noon local time, and the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the action. Until then, check out this video from last night's EPT12 Prague Player Party:

Team PokerStars Pro Down a Man

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

We missed the elimination of Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier, but we learned details after the fact from his girlfriend, Natasha Barbour.

As she told it, Mercier jammed his last 4,400 from the hijack with the {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and received calls from the players in the cutoff and on the button, who both checked the {k-}{5-}{3-} rainbow flop. When a {Q-} appeared on the turn, the cutoff checked and then folded to a bet of 5,000 from the button, who had flopped a set with pocket fives.

The meaningless river was run out, and Mercier took his leave from the tournament. Something tells us that we'll see him tomorrow for the single-day €25,000 High Roller.

Aces Up Don't Work for Kanit

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Mustapha Kanit - from the Super High Roller
Mustapha Kanit - from the Super High Roller

We missed the elimination of Mustapha Kanit, but Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier, who had been seated at the same table, was kind enough to fill us in on the details.

As he told it, Kanit was sitting with around 10,000 when he opened and was met by a three-bet from France's Anthony Picault in the big blind. Kanit called, the flop came down {q-}{6-}{4-}, and Picault continued for 2,200. Kanit ripped it and Picault snap-called.

Picault: {k-}{k-}
Kanit: {a-}{q-}

Kanit had flopped top pair, but he was way behind the overpair of Picault. A {K-} on the turn actually left Kanit drawing dead, meaning the {A-} river that gave him two pair was a moot point.

Neuville Hung Out to Dry

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Pierre Neuville
Pierre Neuville

We missed the elimination of Pierre Neuville, but learned after the fact that the 2015 World Series of Poker November Nine, who finished seventh in that tournament a month back for $1.2 million, fell at the hands of World Poker Tour champ Andy Hwang.

It happened when the flop hit both players hard, giving Neuville a flush draw and Hwang a straight. The chips wound up getting in, and Neuville came up empty.

A Reunion For Two November Niners

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Neil Blumenfield - Pierre Neuville
Neil Blumenfield - Pierre Neuville

Today's seat draw has reunited two men who met a couple of months ago at the final table of the 2015 World Series of Poker Main Event final table.

Pierre Neuville, a regular on the European Poker Tour, bust from the WSOP Main Event in seventh place for $1,203,293 with Neil Blumenfield eventually falling in third place for a $3,398,298 score.

With the duo having locked horns for hours at that particular final table, it will be interesting to see if their history creates some crazy dynamic between them.

Time for Season 12 European Poker Tour Prague Main Event Day 1a

EPT Prague by Tomas Stacha

It is finally here, the Season 12 European Poker Tour Prague Main Event, one of the most eagerly anticipated stops on this prestigious tour.

Prague has been ever-present on the EPT since making its debut in Season 4 and continues to grow year-on-year, creating massive prize pools as a result.

Arnaud Matter won the inaugural EPT Prague Main Event in Season 4, outlasting a field of 555 to get his hands on the winner's trophy and €708,400. Mattern's crown was taken by Italy's Salvatore Bonevena in Season 5, with Jan Skampa and Roberto Romanello conquering Prague in the years that followed.

Prague's attendance figures have soared since Romanello's victory. When the popular Welshman won in Season 7, 565 players competed for the title. The following year, Martin Finger had to navigate his way through 721 opponents. Fast forward to Season 9 and the attendance swelled to 864, with Season 10, won by Julian Track, being the first Prague Main Event to break through the 1,000 players barrier (1,007 to be exact).

Amazingly, last season's Prague Main Event grew again, with 1,107 players turning out for it. Surely it cannot grow again? We don't have long to find out if it will.
