Jonathan Hanley Looking Handy After Day 1a of EAPT UK Main Event

Level 14 : Blinds 15,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Jonathan Hanley
Jonathan Hanley

The first-ever Eurasian Poker Tour Main Event in the United Kingdom has got off to a flying start with Jonathan Hanley locking up a humongous chip lead.

The local hero bagged an impressive 3,180,000 chips, which equates to 159 big blinds when the players reconvene on May 26.

Hanley has secured a number of cashes at the Dusk Till Dawn Poker Club, with his biggest-ever recorded score of £7,000 at the WSOPC event held here earlier in the year. He will be looking to add handsomely to that come Sunday.

Second in the standings is the experienced Jack Allen who banked 1,680,000 chips. Allen has recorded an impressive $570,000 in prize money over the years, including a six-figure run at the 2022 WSOP Main Event where he finished 69th for $121,500. In third place is Ben Fowler who will come back with a stack of 1,555,000.

Best of Day 1a Action

There can only be one choice for hand of the day which came in level five of the tournament which produced an incredible five-way all in scenario. Four of the players had pocket pairs while Timothy Slater had ace-queen.

Preflop, Hok Lai was the favorite to take down the pot with pocket kings, but it was the worst hand preflop which ended up taking a significant chunk of the pot. Richard Shepherd’s pocket sixes managed to connect on a low board to make a seven-high straight to drag in a pot of 684,000.

Despite calling himself a fish after the hand, he managed to build a handsome stack and will return on Sunday with 1,075,000. Lai managed to recover and will come back with 565,000.

But the star of the day has to be the overwhelming chip leader Hanley, who collected almost 20 percent of the chips in play. The catalyst for his success was making a huge call against Darren Jarvis who moved all in for 285,000 on a paired board.

Hanley used all of his four allotted time bank cards and made the call with ace-jack for two pair, while Jarvis tabled ace-ten of spades for a busted flush draw.

From there Hanley was a chip magnet and was not afraid to clash with other monster stacks, especially when he held pocket kings. He slayed Gajanthan Kamalanathan after making kings full of aces for a seven-figure pot and dispatched Adrian Cazacu after the Romanian shoved over 50 big blinds preflop and ran into Hanley’s cowboys.

At time of writing Day 1b is on the verge of conclusion and as soon as the information is available the chip counts will be published on PokerNews.

The action continues tomorrow with Day 1c starting at midday local time, followed by Day 1d at 5 p.m. local time. PokerNews will be concentrating on Day 1c, with end-of-night chip counts for Day 1d. Coverage will continue until May 27 when a winner will be crowned.

Clarke and Hanley decided to check to showdown with a runout of 965105.

Anthony Mallett: JJ All in

The clock has been stopped and only 19 players remain after two eliminations in quick succession.

Adrian Cazacu jammed all in preflop for over 1,000,000 chips and was called by the overwhelming chip leader Jonathan Hanley.

Adrian Cazacu: AxQx
Jonathan Hanley: KxKx

The table was still in shock when Hanley told a PokerNews reporter about the hand. Hanley revealed Cazacu hit a queen on the flop, but couldn't better Hanley who increased his stack to 3,300,000.

A couple of minutes later Gheorge Ciubotaru shoved for 85,000 and was called by Pavel Dobrita.

Pavel Dobrita: 99

It was a flip, but Ciubotaru could not improve after the runout of K63K8 which sent him to the rail as the penultimate bubble boy.

Hanley Takes Commanding Chip Lead

Level 11 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Jonathan Hanley
Jonathan Hanley

After a titanic tussle with Gajanthan Kamalanathan, Jonathan Hanley has put clear daylight between himself and the rest of the field.

With over 400,000 in the pot on a completed board of AA4K6, Kamalanathan bet 175,000 and was shoved on by Hanley which put Kamalanathan at risk for a further 200,000 chips. After utilizing all of his time bank Kamalanathan made the call and was dismayed to see Hanley making a boat with KK which beat his trips as he held AQ.

Hanley now has 11 starting stacks to his name and is putting himself in contention for a massive score.

Jarvis Heads to the Exit After Putting Hanley in a Pressure Cooker

Level 8 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Johnathan Hanley
Johnathan Hanley

With 160,000 in the middle on the completed board of J9866, Jonathan Hanley bet 100,000 from the button.

Darren Jarvis went into the tank used up two of his time-bank cards before announcing all in for 280,500. Hanley went even deeper into the tank and was forced to use all four of his time banks. With only five seconds left he gave a pained verbal call and tabled AJ for two pair.

Jarvis shrugged his shoulders, attempted to muck his cards, and stood up. The dealer turned over A10 for an audacious bluff. While Jarvis was gathering his belongings he quipped to Hanley "Did you feel it? Did you feel the pressure?" and appeared to enjoy the two-minute suffering he inflicted on Hanley.

With 98,000 in the middle, three players saw the flop of 1092. Chris Da-Silva bet 25,000 from the big blind and was met with a shove from the under the gun Dinu Cozac.

Joe Smith on the button took a moment before folding. Da-Silva scrutinized Cozac's stack and decided the 114,000 stack was worth fighting for and made the call.

Chris Da-Silva: JJ

Cozac stood up immediately after Da-Silva revealed pocket jacks. There was no help for Cozac as the 2A completed the board and Da-Silva has more than doubled his starting stack despite sitting down in level five.

Shepherd Wins Five-Way All In Pot!

Level 5 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Richard Shepherd
Richard Shepherd

Francis Obadun bet 7,000 from under the gun and was called by Hok Lai in early position. Timothy Slater in middle position raised to 33,000 and was cold-called by Richard Shepherd in the hijack and Albert Sapiano in the cutoff.

Action folded around to Obadun who looked stunned from all of the action in front of him. He elected to call and announced, "If I hit, it is going in!" Lai had other ideas hover and moved all in for 144,000. Slater shoved for 207,500, and was under-called by Shepherd for 140,900 and Sapiano for 120,000.

Obadun's eyes rocked to the back of his head and was in complete disbelief. He used up a time-bank card before bellowing "F*** it!" and slammed down calling chips.

Albert Sapiano: 1010All in
Richard Shepherd: 66 All in
Hok Lai: KK All in
Timothy Slater: AQ All in
Francis Obadun: 88

An incredible five-way all-in situation and Hok Lai was ahead with pocket kings. However, Shepherd drilled a straight on the turn on the runout of 75344 to take down the lion-share of the pot, Sapiano headed to the exit along with Slater. Lai and Obadun received a small rebate from side pots.

While scooping in the colossal pot, Shepherd sheepishly said "Fish wins!" with a wry smirk on his face.
