WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: Playing Against a Tough Button From The Cutoff
Today we’re focusing on a common spot where you are out of position against a tough opponent on the Button after you raised first-in preflop in a multi table tournament.
Automatically c-betting a standard size is often the best play against weaker opponents typical in lower stakes tournaments. These types of opponents are less likely to put pressure on your c-bets by making moves on the flop.
However, raising in the Cutoff seat and getting called by the Button is a unique scenario in No-Limit Hold’em, since the caller’s range can often be narrower than the raiser’s range. This leads to the Button often having an equity advantage.
Against tougher players you should beware c-betting too frequently on boards that favor the preflop caller. Tough players can exploit this by having robust bluff-raising and floating ranges. Unlike many other spots as the preflop raiser, in this scenario you will frequently check or bet small on the flop.
Also, keep in mind that good players will utilize overbets to target capped ranges and force you off mediocre holdings.
Finally, always pay attention to key blockers. Having them in your hand will allow you to value bet more often and with a greater freedom of bet sizing.
