WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: 3-Betting Big From The Big Blind

This week we’re focused on a cash game spot where you are out of position against a tough player in middle position after 3-betting their open raise from 3BBs to 12BBs from the Big Blind.

Since you are making a large, out of position raise from the Big Blind your range is going to be both very narrow and polarized. This means you will have a significant range advantage over your opponent on most flops, which leads to a high c-betting frequency.

It is important to note that with the larger preflop raise size your middle position opponent will have a narrower, more condensed range than they would in scenarios involving a smaller 3-bet sizing. This will lead to much of their range consisting of middle pair and suited broadway type hands with some big off suit ace hands and small suited aces mixed in.

As a general rule, you will want to be c-betting most flops where you retain the range advantage. With the larger raise preflop you will want to keep a close watch on the postflop pot size on the turn (and river) and how both your bet frequencies and sizing will impact future decisions and your ability to profitably take the hand to showdown.

Typically, reasonably high equity but somewhat vulnerable made hands such as strong overpairs are best played with larger bet sizing.
