The XL Retro series has begun over at 888poker and the first five events have crowned their worthy champions. Germany's "ZockSteffan" goes down in the 888poker history books as the first-ever XL Retro champion.

ZockSteffan was one of 1,162 players who bought into the XL Retro #01 Mega Deep Opening Event for $109. Those entrants fought it out for a slice of the $120,000 prize pool.

The finalist continued falling, and the prize money increased. Romania's "Yzw42_" banked $3,816 for their sixth-place finish, "AGGROAREK" of Germany scooped $5,124 when they busted in fifth, and then "Whosbad" fell by the wayside in fourth for $6,924.

The final four-figure sum went to Brazilian grinder "manel9595." They received $9,420 as the XL Retro series' first event headed into the heads-up stage.

Heads-up saw ZockSteffen take on Peruvian "Diegoavc" for the lion's share of the prize pool, in addition to all of the glory. ZockSteffan got his hands on all of the chips in play and, therefore, the $17,532 top prize. Diegoavc walked away with a $12,816 consolation prize.

Malta Celebrates a New XL Retro Champion

The biggest buy-in event of the 888poker XL Retro series so far, the $525 buy-in Whale Opening Event, drew in 109 entrants who created a $59,500 prize pool. Some $14,660 of that pot is now nestled in the 888poker account of Malta's "PotofGreed."

It was a Maltese one-two, with PotofGreed defeating "Le_Piaf" heads-up, and resigning the runner-up to a $10,466 consolation prize, the tournament's only other five-figure score. Only last week, Le_Piaf won the 888poker Big Shot tournament, turning $109 into $15,480.
