Sunday Briefing

Poland’s “pyszalek” had previously reached the final tables of the PokerStars Sunday Million and Super Tuesday, finishing second in the latter, but never managed to get their hands on the title. Aug. 5 was the day they finally got the proverbial monkey off their back, let’s see what happened.

Some 5,875 players took to the PokerStars virtual felt for this week’s Sunday Million, many staying out of the intense heat in Europe. This substantial crowd created a prize pool of $1,175,000 that was shared among the top 1,052 finishers.

The least any of the nine final table members could win was $9,332 and this is the sum “kZhh” of Hungary took home. A previous Sunday Million winner, kZhh three-bet shoved with ace-queen after pyszalek had opened with a min-raise from the cutoff. Pyszalek called with ace-king, turned a king and sent kZhh to the showers.

Pyszalek busted another opponent to leave only seven player in the tournament. “Jappsa” open-shoved with a suited king-jack and pyszalek called with a suited ace-queen. The Polish grinder paired the ace on the flop, another on the turn, and filled up on the river.

The champion elect continued their wrecking spree by sending “Hadendude” to the rail when their pocket queens prevailed against a pair of nines.

And the same pocket pairs matched up again to send “zl4pped” to the rail. zl4pped committed their stack with a black pair of nines and “HakkaZilla” looked them up with a pair of queens. The former flopped a nine to soar into the lead, but the queen of diamonds landed on the turn to put the ball in HakkaZilla’s court. No miracle one-outer on the river reduced the player count by one.

Pocket jacks were no good for “LBBigSlickAK”. Their jacks ran into the tens of pyszalek who flopped four-of-a-kind to leave LBBigSlick needing running jacks to survive. Only the river was a jack and only four players remained in the hunt for the $158,644 top prize.

Those four became three with the elimination of HakkaZilla who moved all-in with ace-ten of clubs and pyszalek called with a pair of sevens. That pair turned into a set on the flop and they sent another player home despite a scary board.

Heads-up was set soon after when pyszalek ramped up the aggression and used their chip lead to perfection. Pyszalek open-shoved on the button with the lowly eight-four and “ROSTBURK” called with king-queen. A four on the flop and an eight on the river sent ROSTBURK home in third place.

Pyszalek enjoyed a 54.5 million to 4.1 million chip advantage over Tinchoolp768, yet the latter clawed their way back into contention by reducing the lead to 20 million chips. That was as close as they got to a full comeback though because they moved all-in with king-jack and pyszalek called with the dominating ace-jack. Neither player improved their hand by the river; pyszalek’s ace-kicker came into play and Tinchoolp busted in second-place.

Germany’s “TonyCipolla9” took down this weekend’s 888poker $100,000 Sunday Mega Deep to turn a $215 investment into a most welcomed $19,250.

Going into the final table all eyes were on 888poker ambassador Parker “888tonkaaaa” Talbot who finished seventh in last weekend’s tournament. The popular Canadian finished seventh again this week to lock up a $2,750 prize. Will the streaming specialist make it three consecutive final tables in next week’s event?

Each of the top three finishers netted a five-figure score. Brazil’s “botteonpoker” was the last player not to net five-figures, their fourth-place finish was worth a still substantial $7,750.

“Tikkapekka” of Finland walked away with a third-place finish worth $10,750 with Russia’s “matros.ru” being the final casualty of the final table, their second-place so them add $14,250 to their 888poker bankroll.
