5th Anniversary Sunday Storm on PokerStars To Boast a $1 Million Guarantee

Last month, PokerStars celebrated its 10th anniversary of the Sunday Million by supersizing the guarantee of this tournament to $10 million. This Sunday, the world's biggest real-money online poker room will be once again celebrating a milestone with the fifth anniversary of the Sunday Storm. Along with the anniversary comes a prize pool guarantee of $1 million.

While the prize pool is more than three times the usual $300,000, the $11 buy-in will remain the same, so that's plenty of bang for your buck. The structure is similar to it usually is, with players starting with 5,000 chips, 10-minute blinds levels, and two hours of late registration. The one major difference is that players will be allowed one reentry to the tournament if they are eliminated before late registration closes.

The tournament will be capped at 175,000 entrants, and it would not be surprising to witness the tournament come close to or meet that figure with satellites, including freerolls, that are currently running around the clock. At a minimum, the winner of this tournament is guaranteed to take home $100,000, provided there are no deals made on the final table.

History of the Sunday Storm

The origins of the Sunday Storm began over five years ago on March 27, 2011, just weeks before Black Friday shocked poker players. This isn't to say that it was the origins of the first big $11 buy-in Sunday tournament on PokerStars since previously the site was hosting a similar $11 tournament dubbed the Sunday 1/4 Million.

In grand fashion, PokerStars slapped a massive $1 million guarantee to this tournament with many believing at the time it would experience some overlay. This would not be the case as 113,770 players took part in the inaugural Sunday Storm which at the time was the second largest field in a real-money tournament on any online poker room to create a huge $1.137 million prize pool.

Russia's "Uvelir888" etched his name in history by shipping this event to haul in $210,531.

While this weekend's winner likely won't have the opportunity to collect that much due to the revamped payout structure, a few players are likely to have their dreams come true by winning a potential life changing sum for just $11.

After this event, PokerStars reduced the guarantee to $300,000, which it kept for most weeks despite players from the United States unable to play on the site just a few weeks later. However, on several occasions PokerStars has bumped up the buy-in to as high as $1 million to either celebrate other milestones for this tournament or as part of an online poker festival such as the MicroMillions.
