PokerNews Cup Opening Event Results

The €20,000 Guaranteed Opening Event of the 2015 PokerNews Cup came to a close in the early hours of Thursday, Nov. 19, when Germany's Timothy Claude Weltner emerged victorious following nearly 10 hours of play at King's Casino in Rozvadov, Czech Republic.

To bring home the title of the opening event of the second PokerNews Cup of 2015, and to secure a prize of €2,607, Weltner had to survive a field of 163 entries that included players from all over the world.

"I am extremely happy about this result," Weltner told PokerNews. "This was my first live tournament ever, and it's hard to believe I won it. The only downside is that I promised my girlfriend I would split any money prize with her, so now I really have to.

"I love the atmosphere here at the PokerNews Cup, and I really enjoyed this event. Now, I look forward to playing in the Main Event on Thursday and in the €10,000 Guarantee Pot-Limit Omaha event on Friday."

Weltner's victory came after a five-way deal, which the players quickly agreed upon. The deal allowed all of them to split the remaining prize pool in equal parts.

Organized as a warm up for the players at the venue and to get everyone ready for the first flight of the €200,000 Guaranteed Main Event set to begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, the Opening Event turned out to be an exciting tournament with plenty of great action throughout.

"I am loving the event, I am really happy to be here," Australia's Lewis Murray told PokerNews.

Murray, who is currently on a two-month trip across Europe, arrived in Rozvadov after hitting other major European cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Montpellier, Lyon, and Munich.

"I am playing poker to break even on my trip, and when I heard about the PokerNews Cup, I decided to give it a shot," he added. "I thought there might be the chance of an overlay in the inaugural event, so here I am."

Unfortunately for Murray, however, his run did not allow him to reach the final table and hit the top of the payouts, as his adventure ended with a 17th-place finish worth €281. Still, a positive return on his investment will help him offset some of the travel costs.

Here's a look at the results of the players who agreed to the deal:

The action at King's Casino will restart already at 15:00 local time on Thursday, when a Mega Satellite will give away at least eight seats to the highlight of the series, the €200,000 Guaranteed Main Event. The satellite is accessible for as little as €30 and features 15-minute blind levels along with a 5,000-chip starting stack.

Only a few hours later, at 19:00 local time, it will finally be time for the first flight of the series' Main Event to begin. Overall, the tournament features four starting days. After the first Day 1 on Nov. 19, the players will get the opportunity to join the event again on Nov. 20 at 17:00, and on Nov. 21 at 14:00 and 21:00.
