FTOPS XII Event #10: ’Doc Sands’ Sews up Victory
Despite coming to the final table as one of the shortest stacks, David “Doc Sands” Sands proved to be a smooth operator as he took down Event #10 of the 12th Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS XII). This event was a $300+$22 no-limit hold'em affair, guaranteeing $1,500,000. Sands out-lasted a field of 4,145 online runners who gathered to duke it out for the $259,440 top prize. Notable finishes that didn’t make the final table included Jeff “Payton3434” Grimes in 10th ($14,250), Mark “xqsays” Radoja in 17th ($7,425), Walter “JLizard” Wright in 21st ($5,550) and Mark “scrubbyz” Zajdner in 27th ($5,550). The chip counts to begin the final table were as follows:
jojo69jojo – 4,674,661
Bolivar “Ramux” Palacios – 4,261,629
Luukie21 – 2,949,110
fats713 – 1,973,052
Sebago2811 – 1,769,246
Mike “MichaelBpzpz” Blocksidge – 1,624,983
David “Doc Sands” Sands – 1,588,931
z81ima – 1,191,614
Ryan “ryanbluf” Karp – 691,774
Ryan “ryanbluf” Karp’s stay at the final table was a brief one. Four hands in, he was eliminated at the 20,000/40,000/5,000 level. Karp shoved for 756,774 from the hijack with 7♥7♣ and was called by z81ima in the big blind, who tabled a dominating 9♦9♠. The board brought no help for Karp as it ran out A♣8♠6♥A♦8♣, finishing off Karp in ninth place for $19,500. Mike “MichaelBpzpz” Blocksidge was the next to fall, not making it past the 25,000/50,000/6,000 level. David “Doc Sands” Sands opened to 124,465 under the gun and z81ima called in middle position. Blocksidge shoved for 818,383 from the small blind and only Sands came along. Blocksidge held 4♠4♣, but it was crushed by Sands’ K♥K♠. Once again, the smaller pocket pair got no help from the board and Blocksidge was out in eighth place for $26,250.
Fats713’s stack was decimated after getting it in with pocket kings against David Sands’ ace-queen. An ace hit the flop as Sands took the lead and he kept it through to the river. Fats713 never recovered from that blow and departed a few hands later in seventh place for $34,500. Bolivar “Ramux” Palacios was felted later in the level, the victim of a classic cooler in a battle of the blinds. David Sands raised to 124,865 under the gun and Sebago2811 reraised to 400,000 out of the small blind. Palacios looked at K♥K♠ in the big blind and shoved all in for 2,315,349. Sands folded, but Sebago2811 called with A♣A♥. The board rolled out 5♦5♣2♠6♠4♣ as Bolivar “Ramux” Palacios fell in sixth place for $45,000.
At 30,000/60,000/7,500, jojo69jojo busted after shoving from the cutoff for 771,638 with 5♦5♣. On the button, z81ima called with K♥K♠. The cowboys held as the community cards came 9♥2♥9♠2♠6♦, sending jojo69jojo home in fifth place for $60,000. Luukie21 bid adieu during the 40,000/80,000/10,000 level. David “Doc Sands” Sands raised to 184,465 on the button and Luukie21 went all in from the big blind for 1,620,279. Sands called with K♠J♥ and faced off against Luukie21’s A♠2♦. The board ran out Q♠J♦2♣6♥10♥ as Sands won the hand and sent Luukie21 away in fourth place for $79,500.
Sands’ hot streak continued as he eliminated z81ima in third place. On the button, z81ima made it 222,000 to play and Sands reraised to 568,465 from the big blind. After requesting time, z81ima shipped all his chips into the middle for 2,438,988 and Sands insta-called with A♥K♥, having z81ima’s K♦Q♠ in dire shape. The board fell 7♠J♠6♦3♠3♣ as z81ima collected $102,000 for the third-place finish.
David “Doc Sands” Sands began heads-up play with over a 3-to-1 chip lead and he closed out the tournament at the 50,000/100,000/10,000 level. Sebago2811 moved all in for 1,410,806 with K♣7♦ and Sands called with A♥2♣. The board ran out a safe 8♦2♠3♣8♥6♣ for Sands and the tournament was over. Sebago2811 finished runner-up, earning $157,500.
