One Step Charity Poker Championship Raises $100K to Send Kids with Cancer to Camp
On Thursday, March 6th, One Step Programs hosted the 9th Annual Charity Poker Championship benefitting Children's Oncology Services. The event attracted more than 250 poker players and spectators to the National Hellenic Museum for an evening of poker and high stakes gambling, memorable food and drinks provided by Marcello’s, prizes and of course, charity. The event raised more than $100,000 towards One Step Programs, which was enough money to send more than 100 kids with cancer to camp.
"Our strong volunteer base is the key to our long-term success with this event," said Stuart Lissner, Board Member of Children’s Oncology Services, Inc. and Co-Chairman of One Step Programs 2014 Charity Poker Championship. "We typically have 50 to 75 volunteers working the event. We have experienced poker directors, dealers, bankers, registrants, table monitors and an excellent MC."
Dan Bernstein from WSCR "The Score" AM 670 and a board member of the nonprofit returned as emcee a players competed for approximately $15,000 in prizes. In the end, Daniel Winkowski from Lake Villa, Ill. emerged victorious in the tournament to win a seat at the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas sponsored by RW Baird.
