2008 PokerNews Cup Australia Championships - Event #5

The G
The G
We've reached the midway point of the 2008 PokerNews Cup Australia Championships, and that means it's time for the Tony G Celebrity Shootout Bounty Tournament. Tony Guoga and several local poker celebrities will be teaming up with senior members of the PokerNews team for this $550 no limit hold'em event, scheduled to begin at 7:10 p.m. local time this evening.

While the tournament has been deemed a 'Shootout' by its organizers, the structure plays a bit different than a typical shootout-style event. The tournament will be played just like any other multi-table freezeout until the field shrinks to 32 players. At that point, the staff will conduct a redraw of the final four tables, seeding the remaining players according to their chip stack size. The stacks will then be evenly distributed across four tables -- eight players at each -- and then the shootout portion kicks in. Each table will play down to two players, and the final two at each table will earn a spot at the final table. Chips carry over after each redraw, so players are forced to play with the chips they're able to accumulate throughout the tournament.

And last, but certainly not least, one player (or more) at each table will have a $500 bounty on his head to add to the madness. To follow the fun, check back at 7:10 p.m. local time for live updates, chip counts, photos and video interviews direct from the tournament floor. We'll see you then!

Rodrigues Doubles Early

The flop came down {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} and Manny Rodrigues found all of his chips in the middle of the table. It was only a few hands into the event, but Rodrigues already had anm opponent on the ropes with the nut flush, {J-Clubs} {2-Clubs}. His opponent held {6-Clubs} {5-Clubs}. Peter Aristidou folded {A-?} {K-?} face up on the flop with all of the crazy action that he saw going on in the hand.

The turn and river fell the {8-Diamonds} then the {9-Diamonds}, giving Rodrigues an early double up to over 10,000 chips.

Tony G's Bounty Claimed First

Tony G Preparing to Exit
Tony G Preparing to Exit
As the namesake of this event, all eyes are on Tony G over at Table 29. Just a few minutes into the tournament, he moved all in for his whole stack with {9-Hearts} {9-Clubs}. Action folded around to Con Cotsomitis, and he made the call in the dark before he even looked at his cards. The rest of the table passed, and Cotsomitis turned up a reasonable hand: {A-Spades} {2-Diamonds}. As Tony G stood and a crowd gathered around the table, the dealer ran out the board: {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} {5-Clubs} {4-Hearts}.

Coming from behind to pair his ace, Cotsomitis delivers the early deathblow to Tony G. He will pocket $500, and claims the first bounty of the day.

Damm: Bigger Flush

We pick up a heads up pot between James Honeybone and Kenneth Damm on the river, with the board showing {K-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} {J-Spades} {3-Spades} {6-Spades}. Both players end up all in after the last street, with Damm having his man slightly covered. With a big pile of chips up for grabs early, the hands are shown down:

Honeybone: {Q-Spades} {8-Spades}
Damm: {K-Spades} {5-Spades}

Both men flopped a pair and improved to a flush on fifth street, but Damm has Honeybone pegged by one. He collects an early near-double up, sending James Honeybone to the rail in the process.

A Bottle of Red and 7-6 Offsuit

While sharing a bottle of red wine together, Mark Vos and Jay Kinkade do have some time to actually play poker. This hand involved Vos as Kinkade elected to fold and enjoy his recently poured glass.

When everyone at the table folded over to Vos in the small blind, he just opened shoved for 12,500. The big blind called with {A-Hearts} {Q-Clubs}. Vos held small connectors in the {7-Spades} {6-Hearts}.

The board ran out {K-Hearts} {4-Spades} {3-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} and kicked Vos all the way back to 4,500 chips. He's been playing quite eratic since the tournament began, so we may see some more interesting hands and plays from Vos pretty soon.
