PokerStars Signs Swedish Star William Thorson
Team PokerStars grew by one on Tuesday when the world's largest poker site announced the signing of Swedish pro William Thorson to a deal. Thorson, who has garnered nearly $2 million in lifetime tournament winnings, has had several recent strong showings on the Stars-sponsored European Poker Tour and also ran deep in the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event, where he finished 13th.
The Varberg, Sweden native will begin representing PokerStars at the currently running 2008 WSOP, including the Main Event, and will likely be a regular Stars face at European events and online at PokerStars.com.
Said Michael Holmberg, PokerStars' Regional Manager, Nordics and Baltics, "We're thrilled to sign the number one player on the Swedish poker scene, William has had great success, and now as a member of Team PokerStars Pro we believe he'll raise his game further in the year to come."
Thorson, who grew up playing poker and credits his father for teaching him the game, has been a regular on Stars since 2002, when he made his first and only deposit to date – in the sum of $50. "To be a member of Team PokerStars Pro is an honor for me," said Thorson. "It's a great team with many of the world's greatest players and I'm honored to be included in such company – as a player I'm very proud to have my skills recognised in this way. It's a great opportunity for me and I hope to be able to achieve big results."
Thorson will be visible online at PokerStars under the screen name "William".
