Day 6 of the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event has come and gone. We got through four and a half levels of play today, which means that we are finally back on track with no more overlapping of levels at the end of the day. Hoorah!
The Main Event remains on track as our field of 205 players has been reduced to the magical number of 78 by the close of play. There were big movers and shakers, in both directions, with perhaps none greater than the fall of the legendary Johnny Chan. Poker fans around the world were excited to see Chan going deep in this event, but his run ended rather abruptly today after running both kings, and then jacks, into opponents' pocket aces. It was too much for even the great Johnny Chan to overcome.
Others to join Chan at the cashier during the day included Phil Galfond, Gualter Salles, Robert Mizrachi, Tristan Wade, JP Kelly, Theo Tran, Jesper Hougaard, Christian Harder, Todd Witteles, Juha Helppi, Ian Gordon and the last woman standing in the field, Breeze Zuckerman, who finished in 121st place.
At the other end of the spectrum, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi was amongst the leaders throughout the day to continue his rich form during this series. However he was overtaken in the last level of play by Theo Jorgensen (9,295,000) who will enter Day 7 of the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event with all of the cameras, attention and pressure as official "chip leader". We'll have the complete and official chip counts for you shortly.
Others still in contention include John Racener, Alexander Kostritsyn, William Thorson, Matt Affleck, Bryn Kenney, David Baker, Scott Clements, David Benyamine, Johnny Lodden, Tony Dunst, Hasan Habib, Peter Jetten and Jean-Robert Bellande.
We'll be back to do it all over again tomorrow as the action kicks off at 12 noon local time. That's all from us at the Rio this evening and we look forward to your company again tomorrow as we reduce the field down to our final 27.
In a crazy last hand to finish the evening, Joshua Norris started the action with a raise to 100,000 from the cutoff before Jakob Toestesen made it 265,000 from the button. Action was then with Jonathan Duhamel in the big blind and he announced he was all in, covering both opponents. Norris decided to call all in for his last 1.2 million chips as a rather stunned Toestesen folded face up.
Norris:
Duhamel:
Toestesen wasn't thrilled with what he saw after folding queens, but it got even worse as the flop was spread . The turn was the and river the to leave Duhamel's pair in front to take down the monster pot and eliminate Norris from the tournament.
Just as the last hands were playing out, a huge one developed over on the secondary feature table between Manuel Davidian and Filippo Candio.
Davidian opened with a raise from the button, Candio reraised to 265,000 from the small blind, and the big blind got out. Davidian then reraised again to 610,000, and Candio didn't take too long before declaring he was all in for about 2.6 million total.
Davidian exhaled in response, then after tanking for a bit made the call. Davidian tabled and Candio .
The flop came , causing Davidian to move away from the table quickly at the sight of the king. He leaned back to see the turn and river, and after a long period of chip counting it was determined Davidian had just about 100,000 left with which to play. Meanwhile, Candio suddenly had more than 5.3 million in his stack.
"Good gambling, eh?" said Candio to Davidian afterwards. "Go for the maximum, not the minimum." Understandably, Davidian wasn't in such a cheery mood about it all.
One hand later a dejected Davidian was all in with versus an opponent's , didn't improve, and was knocked out in 80th place.
On one of the last hands of the night, Gabriel Alarie got his stack all in with against the pocket queens of Matthew Berkey. Queens were best on a ten-high board, to give Berkey a little end-of-the-night boost and to relieve Alarie of the need to return tomorrow.
The clock has been paused at the magical ten-minute mark -- okay, 09:55 tonight -- and a mythical card was drawn. We're told it was a four, and that's how many hands we'll play at each table before we call for the bags and the cart.
Alexander Kostritsyn opened to 105,000 from late position and Duy Le made the call from the button.
Kostritsyn fired out 180,000 on the flop with Le making the call before the landed on the turn and the Russian fired out 385,000.
Le made the call as the dealer dropped the on the river with Kostritsyn checking to Le.
Le fired out 400,000, and after some deliberation, Kostritsyn made the call only to muck at the sight of Le's .
