Day 3 Completed

Day 3 Down, Eyster's Got the View from the Top

Kevin Eyster
Kevin Eyster
Day 3 is a wrap in Monaco, and American Kevin Eyster is off into the night as chip leader, a position he's had most of the day to get used to. Matt Perrins is very close behind him after winning a massive pot with kings against aces and then wielding his back stack skillfully all evening. Jean Francois Talbot rounds out the top three. Nick Schulman, Andrew Chen, and Manuel Bevand will also be back on Thursday to fight for a place at the Grand Final final table.

The day began with 116 players, but by 10:00, the field was down to 24. Team PokerStars Pro Vicky Coren nearly made it to Day 4, finishing just short in 27th place (€40,000). Fellow pros Alex Gomes and Lex Veldhuis were also only a few eliminations away. Chris Moneymaker started with a big stack but was eliminated in 69th place (€25,000). UK football phenom Teddy Sheringham hit the rail as well, as did EPT Berlin champion Kevin MacPhee. Neil Channing, Nicolas Levi, Davidi Kitai, and Mel Judah all also finished in the money.

The last 24 will be back at noon local time on Thursday to play down to the eight-handed final table. Here's how the field will be laid out when they return for the penultimate day:

LarsLuzak Busts One

From the cutoff, Sami Kelopuro made it 65,000 to go and found a caller in Gilbert Diaz from the big blind.

The flop came down {9-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. The two checked and the {q-Hearts} fell on the turn.

Diaz moved all-in and Kelopuro snap-called flipping over {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}. Diaz showed {q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}.

The river was the {6-Spades} and Kelopuro moved up to over 1 million in chips, while Diaz hit the rail.

We now have to lose one more player to reach the final 24.

Coren Crushed

It's all over for Ms. Coren. Herve Costa checked a tailor-made flop of {K-Clubs} {J-Clubs} {2-Hearts}, and Vicky Coren bet 45,000 with about 250,000 behind. Costa then check-raised, not counting out a bet so much as throwing in enough chips to commit Coren or make her fold. She went with it, moving all in, and Costa called. He had {K-Diamonds} {2-Spades} for top and bottom pair. Coren tabled {Q-Clubs} {9-Clubs} for a flush draw and gutshot straight draw. She seemed confident that she'd hit, but the turn was the unhelpful {J-Hearts} and the river was another brick, the {4-Spades}. Coren nodded and made a quick exit in 27th place.

The players are now two eliminations away from Day 4.

Schulman Shoves

Kelopuro - not up for it
Kelopuro - not up for it
Nick Schulman raised to 52,000 in the cutoff, and Sami Kelopuro made it 156,000 from the button. The blinds both folded and it was back on Schulman, who very quickly and very quietly announced all in. Kelopuro took only a few seconds to fold, and Schulman picked up the pot.
