Monnette's Bluff Actually Pays Off

John Monnette check-raised the {7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop after Dominik Nitsche fired a bet. Nitsche called, and the two saw the board pair on the turn with the {4-Spades}. Monnette fired 8,000, and Nitsche made the call.

The river completed the board with the {J-Hearts}. Monnette took some time for thought, then fired all in.

"How much is it?" asked Nitsche rather quickly. He then tanked for a bit. After about two minutes, Nitsche called.

Upon hearing Nitsche announce the call, Monnette shot up from his chair and tabled the {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} for just ace high. It was apparent he thought he was going to lose the hand and be out the door, so was seemingly getting a head start. But then...

"Wow, I'm such an idiot," was the response from Nitsche before turning over the {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for a worse ace high.

Monnette and the table couldn't believe it. Nitsche was forced to send over the chips to pay off Monnette and dropped down to 13,000.

"In a way, you were right," said Daniel Negreanu from a couple spots over. Right that Monnette was bluffing, but wrong that he was actually bluffing with the best hand.
