Who is the King?

THE SPORTSMAN -- Humberto Brenes knocked out a short stacked player with his Kings, all-in preflop against A-J. Upon seeing the raggy low flop, Humberto stood up and pointed his plastic shark, red eyes aglow (the shark) at the cameras and the hapless player, saying, "Who is the King?" And then answering himself, "The Shark is the King!"

No help for his opponent and Brenes swept in the chips saying, "Hunnnngry!"

All-in from Bjorin

Chris Bjorin was recently all-in, possibly worried that, although equipped with outs galore, that his {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts} was somewhat vulnerable against Jani Sointula with the board reading {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

However, Jani was drawing to the flush too, and was probably even more surprised that his {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts} were live. But come the river, it was Bjorin who paired up, hitting the academic {K-Diamonds} on the end.

As a result, Jani is down to 11,200 whilst Bjorin jumps up to 19,050.

Spaces Clearing

Another table has broken here at the Sportsman, and players are keeping up the pretty fast pace. You can almost hear the 'pop' as the moths of shortstacks run into the deadly light bulbs of their bigstack neighbours, who aren't afraid to gamble to knock them out.

One who managed to survive the all-in experience just now was Paul Wasicka, doubling to 22k off Mike Mizrachi, who gave him a spin holding {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} to Wasicka's {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}. The board when all the money crossed the line was, however, {9-Hearts}{3-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and being 10k wasn't going to put Mizrachi into the danger zone just yet.

Not surviving this level was David Williams - he was already halfway out the door, having mucked his hand without showing on a {4-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{5-Spades}{8-Spades} board before his opponent even turned over his {6-Spades}{7-Spades} for the straight. The opponent was Joe Serock, adding to his already impressive stack, now at 61,800. "He's a machine," comments his neighbour.

Barry Greenstein Drags a Pot

The Robin Hood of Poker
The Robin Hood of Poker
From the floor of the Empire Casino...

I spotted the Robin Hood of Poker robbing the rich in an attempt to help save the poor. On a board of {A-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, with about 8,500 in the pot, Guillermo Garcia checked. Barry Greenstein nonchalantly tossed out an orange chip for a 5,000 bet. Garcia called and Greenstein showed {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}. Garcia mucked and Greenstein dragged the pot.

Greenstein increased his stack to 33,000. If you don't know, Greenstein donates a percentage of his tournament winnings to various charities such as Children, Inc.

The Poker Diva Takes a Hit

Liz Lieu and her stylish hat
Liz Lieu and her stylish hat
THE FIFTY-- On a flop of {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}{10-Spades}, Liz Lieu faced an all in bet for a little over 14,000 and after a minute or so in the tank, decided to call. She turned over {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} and was dismayed to see her opponent's {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. The turn was the {3-Clubs}, the river was the {5-Diamonds}, and Liz's opponent doubled to 50,000 while she slipped to 24,000.

A true professional, Liz may be down, but she's certainly not out. She was smiling and listening to her iPod again within minutes of having those aces cracked.

Action From Actionjack

What you looking at, punk?
What you looking at, punk?
From the floor of the Empire Casino...

Paul 'Actionjack' Jackson, who's yet to set the tournament on fire with just 13,700, bumped into me during the break to retell his tales of woe...

"I haven't really played many big pots," said Paul. "Just this one against Matthew Hankins where I limped with {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. The flop came {8-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}, he bet 200 from the small blind, I raised to 500 and he called. The turn came a {10-Clubs} giving me top two pair, but putting a possible flush out there. He checked, I bet 500 and he made it 1,500 to play. I sensed a flush draw, but called hoping to fill up if I was right. The river was a {5-Clubs}, pairing the board and making it four clubs in total. He checked rather dejectedly, so I thought I could take it away from him by betting out 2,500. He thought and thought for ages before calling with the King rag suited for the second nut flush, but I think that was at the very parameter of his calling boundaries."

Humberto Brenes Doubles Up

The Sportsman.......

Humbeeeeeeeertooooo has just doubled up with a pair of Kings against Ace Jack. No idea how it went down, he just told us in Costa Rican.

Very happy man indeed, as always

Farzad Bonyadi Doubles Up

THE FIFTY-- With the board reading {Q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades} on the turn, Farzad Bonyadi moved all in for a little over 5,000 and got a call. His opponent tabled {K-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a flush draw while Bonyadi showed {5-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for second pair. The river was the {Q-Diamonds} and Bonyadi's two pair earned him a double-up.
