Anthony Marsico Leads Largest Main Event Field in History as Players Combine on Day 3

Anthony Marsico
Anthony Marsico

After six days of play, including four starting flights and two day 2s, the largest World Series of Poker Main Event field is finally ready to combine. The record breaking 10,112 entrants have now been whittled down to 3,617 players, all of whom will be playing simultaneously for the first time since the start of the tournament.

Currently leading the way is Anthony Marsico, who managed to bag an impressive 797,000 after Day 2abc. He is followed closely by fellow Day 2abc survivor Christopher Vincent on 772,000 while Day 2d chipleader and third place finisher in the 2019 Main Event Alex Livingston rounds out the top three on 750,500.

Plenty of big names remain in the hunt for the mammoth $10,000,000 top prize including five time bracelet winner Adam Friedman (581,000), 2022 GPI Player of the Year Stephen Song (577,000) and 2021 Main Event last woman standing Dragana Mackelprang (503,000). They all return with healthy stacks comfortably above the tournament average.

Others have their work cut for them as they return for the third day with somewhat fewer big blinds to work with. Four time bracelet winner Farzad Bonyadi returns to his seat with a less-than-starting-stack of 48,000, while Poker Hall of Famer Eli Elezra also will be looking to spin up on Day 2 as he resumes play with 58,500. Still, the old poker adage of "a chip and a chair" is as relevant in this event as any other with one only needing to look to the 1982 Main Event champion Jack Straus for inspiration.

Play resumes at 12 p.m. local time in Level 11 at blinds of 1,000/2,500 with a 2,500 big blind ante and will continue for five two-hour levels. As on the previous days, there will be a 20-minute break after ever level with a 75-minute dinner break following Level 13.

The PokerNews live reporting will be on hand to provide updates throughout the day so be sure to follow along as action continues in the historic Event #81: $10,000 Main Event World Championship at the 2024 World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

Marius Kudzmanas
Marius Kudzmanas

Brett Hoy jammed all in for 26,500 from middle position before Gregory Kelley put his stack of 59,500 in on the button.

Marius Kudzmanas sat in the small blind and tanked for some time before calling with the covering stack.

Brett Hoy: KJ All in
Gregory Kelley: AK All in
Marius Kudzmanas: AQ

While Daniel Negreanu, who was also sitting at the table, filmed the pot for his vlog, Kudzmanas managed to hit two pair on the 85AQJ runout to eliminate both of his opponents.

Negreanu Rivers Opponent Out

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Daniel Negreanu

The player under the gun had gone all in for just 6,500 chips and was looked up by Daniel Negreanu on the button.

Under the gun: A4 All in
Daniel Negreanu: AJ

Negreanu was rooting for a chop on the 66K board and was elated when his opponent paired up on the 4 turn.

The J then came on the river. "Oh shit," said Negreanu as he raked in the pot and eliminated his opponent.

After the hand, Negreanu and the knocked-out player took a picture together, with the latter leaving in seemingly good spirits.

Dwan Forces Out Two

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Tom Dwan
Tom Dwan

There was a three-way pot going on as the board read Q873. The pot had around 43,000 in it. Tom Dwan was in middle position and took some time before acting. Eventually he bet 32,000. Bradley Mercer called in the big blind and an early position player with the shortest stack came along as well with the call to build the pot even more.

The river came the 9. Dwan was again deliberate with his action as he stood up to assess both stacks of his opponents, with the early position player having about 42,000 effective. After over a minute, Dwan fired 65,000.

Mercer quickly folded and so did the early position player and Dwan took down the chunky pot.
--
Shortly afterwards, Dwan eliminated the same early position player when he shoved for about 62,000 with AK and Dwan's QxQx held up in the run out.

Zhou Cracks Mcmahon's Aces

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Quan Zhou
Quan Zhou

There were around 75,000 chips in the pot on a board of 46J9 when Joseph Mcmahon checked to Quan Zhou, who fired a bet of 19,500. Mcmahon called.

On the flush-completing 3 river, Mcmahon checked again and was then faced a bigger bet of 100,000 from Zhou. Mcmahon thought for some time before he dropped in the call.

Zhou tabled JJ, and Mcmahon gave up the pot. As Zhou was raking in the chips, Mcmahon showed AA.

On the same table, Loni Hui is up to around 850,000 chips.

Players in the field have been sent on their first 20-minute break of the day.

Players will return on Level 12, which features blinds of 1,500/3,000 with a 3,000 big-blind ante.

Matusow Folds to Galipienso's Pressure After Lengthy Tank

Level 12 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

Mike Matusow and Adrian Garcia Galipienso were heads-up on a board of J1034 with a sizable pot already in the middle.

Matusow was in the big blind and checked to Galipienso, who bet 55,000. Matusow called.

The 8 completed the board and Matusow checked again — prompting Galipienso to shove, which was enough to put Matusow all in for approximately 120,000.

Matusow went deep into the tank and riffled his chips as he contemplated his decision for his tournament life.

"They always say go with your gut," Matusow said.

Eventually, the clock was called on Matusow and one of the floor staff informed him he had 30 seconds to act.

Matusow laid his hand down with about five seconds to go and Galipienso was sent the pot.

"I should have went with my gut," Matusow said. "If you're wrong, you just move onto the next tournament."

Matusow was eliminated shortly after the hand occurred.

No ROI for 2023 Main Event Bubble Jeppe Bisgaard

Level 12 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jeppe Bisgaard
Jeppe Bisgaard

At last year's Main Event, Jeppe Bisgaard was one of three individuals eliminated on the bubble after running kings into aces. Although he fell short of the money, Bisgaard did receive his buy-in back as part of a three-way chop of two min cashes in addition to securing a seat in this year's edition after winning a blind all in with the two other players who bubbled. He was, however, unable to parlay that into a cash to bring his total return on investment across the two tournaments to exactly $0.

Jayphong Nguyen opened to 3,000 from middle position and was called by Patsy Altomari in the cutoff as well as Adam Nattress on the button. Bisgaard then moved all in for his last 29,000 out of the small blind. Nguyen responded by raising to 55,000, forcing the two other players out of the hand.

Jeppe Bisgaard: QJ All in
Jayphong Nguyen: KK

Bisgaard had run his short stack directly into a premium holding and was not even offered a sweat on the 3724A runout as his main event came to a premature end. Should the Dane choose to take another shot next year, he will have to pony up $10,000 just like everyone else
