Francisco Perez Moreno Bags Huge as Day 3 of WSOP Main Event Ends on Soft Bubble

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Francisco Perez Moreno

The 2024 World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event saw a record-breaking turnout of 10,112 people. Of those, 3,617 survived Day 2abc and Day 2d and converged at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas for the first time at the start of Day 3. However, at the end of the five levels of play, only 1,529 remained to bag up for Day 4.

With 1,517 players receiving a part of the massive $94,041,600 prize pool, the tournament ended only twelve players away from bursting the bubble. The person who has the least fear of bubbling the Main Event is Francisco Perez Moreno. The Spanish player managed to bag up 2,187,000, being the only player to cross the two-million mark, a feat rarely seen on Day 3 of the Main Event.

As he was bagging his gargantuan stack, good for 273 big blinds at the start of Day 4, Perez Moreno told PokerNews that obtaining his stack was "easy" as he had been running well all day. "My value-bets got paid, my bluffs received folds, it was sick. I was flipping out."

When asked about his strategy for tomorrow, he answered, "I will try pushing people around, but I'm not used to these kinds of tournaments as I'm mainly a pot-limit Omaha cash game player."

Perez Moreno may not be used to playing tournaments, but he crushed the competition on Day 3 and joined the likes of recent bracelet winner Francis Anderson (1,660,000) and $25K Fantasy Draft picks Ren Lin (1,570,000), and Nacho Barbero (1,289,000) in the ranks of seven-figure stacks.

Other notables who bagged up more than the average in their pursuit of the $10,000,000 first-place prize include Danny Tang (980,000), Adrian Mateos (960,000), and Mo Nuwwarah (960,000).

Meanwhile, Phil Ivey (597,000), Ethan "Rampage" Yau (504,000) and 2021 Main Event Champion Koray Aldemir (443,000) found themselves in the middle of the pack at the end of the day, while Ivey's fellow Hall of Famers Erik Seidel and Daniel Negreanu will have to try and survive the bubble with less than ten big blinds, starting Day 4 with 78,000 and 74,000, respectively.

Another player who made it through the three days of poker so far is Cody Daniels. The terminally ill Daniels stole the heart of the poker world last year in the 2023 WSOP Main Event when he crossed playing it off his bucket list and managed to cash. Despite his physical struggles, he has returned this year and is set to book back-to-back in-the-money finishes.

"I feel destroyed, absolutely destroyed," Daniels shared with PokerNews after the night had ended and he was done bagging his 356,000 chips. "The first days were tolerable, but now I'm ripping at the seams. It gets worse every day, but I'm pushing through. My head is in the game, and I'm playing well. It might be acceptable to be five or ten minutes late tomorrow so I can get some rest; we'll see."

Day 3 Action

The day started with 3,617 hopefuls, but plenty had their Main Event dreams crushed within the first few hours. Among the earlier departures were bracelet winners Ali Eslami, Rep Porter, and Ben Lamb, while the likes of 2012 Champion Greg Merson, Triple Crown winner Niall Farrell, and Mike Matusow soon joined them at the rail.

Kevin Gerhart, Andrew Lichtenberger, Felipe Ramos, and Maria Konnikova did not make it to the last level either, while the likes of Nick Schulman, Julien Sitbon, and Christoph Vogelsang were among the final players eliminated on Day 3.

The remaining players will return at noon local time Wednesday, June 10, to decide who will make the money and guarantee themselves $15,000 and who will walk away empty-handed. Five more two-hour levels are slated, with a 15-minute break after every level. The tournament will resume in Level 16 with blinds of 4,000/8,000 with an 8,000 big blind ante, and a 75-minute dinner break is planned after Level 18.

Daniels Flips Coin to Determine D'Ambrosio's Fate

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Cody Daniels
Cody Daniels

The board read 94K92. Jimmy D'Ambrosio had jammed all in from the hijack for his remaining 40,000 into a pot of about 65,000.

Cody Daniels was in the small blind and was fully talking out the hand while deciding whether to call or not. Eventually he got a coin from D'Ambrosio to flip to determine the action.

"Ok this side call and this side call" Daniels said, "Seems like a loaded coin" answered D'Ambrosio. Daniels flipped it and slammed it down "Call!" he confirmed.

"Two pair" said D'Ambrosio as he tabled the 99 for quads.

"Oh man, well if I had to lose it, I'm glad it was to you Jimmy" said Daniels as he lost a portion of his stack and D'Ambrosio stayed alive.

Two Pair Over Two Pair Sends Vogelsang Out

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

Christoph Vogelsang and Damian Elias were heads-up blind-versus-blind on a flop of Q83.

Elias checked from the small blind and Vogelsang bet 31,000. Elias then check-raised to 135,000 and Vogelsang went deep into the tank. The clock was eventually called and Vogelsang called with about five seconds left to act.

The 4 fell on the turn and Elias quickly announced he was all in, which was enough to put Vogelsang all in for his last 125,000.

Vogelsang again tanked long enough for the clock to be called. Vogelsang committed the rest of his chips with one second left to act.

Shiina Okamoto raised from the hijack. Lingkun Lu, in the big blind, three-bet to 52,000. Okamoto tanked before responding with a four-bet to 125,000.

The action was back on Lu, who put in a five-bet to 250,000. A large crowd started to form as Okamoto spent a considerable amount of time in the tank, finally electing to fold. As the pot was shipped his way, Lu tabled 72, much to the table's surprise.

Noah Boeken
Noah Boeken

With less than 100 players to go before the money would be reached, Noah Boeken three-bet a raise of 12,000 from the player under the gun to 40,000 in the small blind.

His opponent called and also called when the 2104 saw Boeken bet 31,000 chips. Boeken then sized up to 68,000 on the 5 turn and was called again.

Finally, Boeken fired 117,000 on the J river and was looked up for the last time. Boeken showed AA for a pair of aces, and his opponent flung his cards into the muck.

Danny Tang

Danny Tang raised from under the gun to 11,000, receiving a call from the cutoff. The button moved all in for approximately 71,000. Tang moved all in to put the cutoff at risk for their effective stack and the cutoff made the call.

Button: QQ All in
Cutoff: 1010 All in
Danny Tang: KK

The flop landed 8Q4 putting the button in the lead with a set of queens, however, Tang had extra outs to a flush to take the pot. The K peeled on the turn and Tang made a superior set. The 5 river saw Tang best both his opponents, sending each of them to the rail.

Christoph Vogelsang was heads-up from the big blind against the player in the hijack on a A46 flop.

Vogelsang check-called a 7,000 bet from his opponent on the flop and then both players checked on the 3 turn.

The 9 completed the board and Vogelsang checked again, prompting a 30,000 bet from his opponent. Vogelsang paused for a minute and then raised to 95,000, which his opponent called after a bit of thought.

Vogelsang tabled A7 for the nut flush and his opponent sent his hand into the muck.

Dinner Break

Koray Aldemir

Players have been sent on a 75-minute dinner break. The action will get back underway at approximately 8:05 p.m. local time.

Here are some highlights from the last two hours of play:

Play will resume on Level 14, which features 3,000/5,000 blinds with a 5,000 big blind ante.

2021 Champ Aldemir Scoops a Massive Pot

Level 13 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Koray Aldemir
Koray Aldemir

On the PokerGO feature table, Koray Aldemir, the 2021 WSOP Main Event winner, raised on the button to 8,000 with 54 before Dan Grolemund three-bet to 26,000 in the small blind with AQ.

After the world champ made the call, the flop came out 4Q5, a bit of a cooler. Grolemund led for 33,000 and received a call. When the 2 appeared on the turn, Grolemund this time opted for a check with top pair.

Aldemir, holding two pair, bet 62,000, about half the size of the pot. Grolemund then went for a check-raise all in for 222,000 total. That put Aldemir into a brief tank before calling the bet. Grolemund had picked up a gutshot straight draw on the turn as an extra four outs, but the 6 on the river sent the past champion a monster pot of 570,000, and sent Grolemund home on Day 3.
