Honkonen of Team Hopkins Digs Deep for Call

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

Action picked up on a board showing 10734 in a hand between Charles Honkonen of Team Hopkins in the small blind and a player in early position.

The pot was bloated with more than 400,000 in the middle and the players were waiting on the river card.

The dealer placed 8 on the board, and with it came high drama.

Honkonen checked, and his opponent bet most of his stack of 120,500, leaving 500 behind.

Honkonen asked the dealer for a count, and the dealer confirmed the amount of the bet. The wager put Honkonen deep in the tank. He first counted out the amount and separated it off to the side of his team’s chip stack. Honkonen then stared at the board for a few moments before shifting his attention to his opponent, who was motionless.

Honkonen then leaned back in his chair and quietly talked the hand through, shaking his head a few times. He leaned forward, looked at his opponent one more time before reaching down to grab the 120,500 in chips to move them forward for a call.

His opponent tabled AQ for ace high. Honkonen triumphantly tabled A4 for a pair of fours for the win, which left his opponent with just 500.

“I tried,” Honkonen’s opponent said before tapping the table in Honkonen’s direction.

The dealer pushed the massive pot to Team Hopkins, whose chip stack swelled to 1,500,000.
