Luke Varrasso: A10

The flop KQ5 gave Shimamoto a gutshot straight draw and a chance at survival. The turn Q bricked and the river was the 2, with start-of-day chip leader Shimamoto sent to the rail in fourth place for $105,122.

Berry Deals Big Blow to Shimamoto's Stack

Level 39 : Blinds 600,000/1,200,000, 1,200,000 ante

Hector Berry raised to 2,400,000 from the button and Branden Shimamoto three-bet jammed from the small blind for Harrison Ashdown to quickly fold his big blind and get out of their way.

Hector Berry: AQ All in
Branden Shimamoto: A10

"I need a ten," Shimamoto shouted out to his rail.

The dealer delivered just that when they revealed the 510K on the flop for Shimamoto to hit a pair of a tens but Berry also picked up the straight draw.

The turn was the 7 which didn't change things but the J on the river did as Berry hit his straight to double up and leave Shimamoto short.

Two Pair for Berry

Level 39 : Blinds 600,000/1,200,000, 1,200,000 ante

Hector Berry raised to 2,000,000 from the button, and Harrison Ashdown defended his big blind.

They both checked through the J72 flop to the 4 on the turn. Ashdown check-called the 1,900,000 bet of Berry.

The J completed the board, and Ashdown checked it for the final time. Berry fired a bet of 3,600,000 out for Ashdown to call but muck when Berry tabled the 107 for two pair.

Luke Varrasso

Luke Varrasso opened to 2,100,000 and got calls from Branden Shimamoto and Harrison Ashdown in the blinds.

The flop came 754 and all three players checked. Shimamoto bet 2,500,000 on the 7 turn and Varrasso was the only caller.

The river was the 6. Shimamoto bet 4,000,000 and Varrasso called, tabling J2.

"Fuck," said Varrasso. "I thought I had a three!" (for the straight).

Shimamoto turned over K10 for king-high and won the pot.

"What the fuck just happened?" said Berry, as Shimamoto took down the pot.

Level 38 : 500,000/1,000,000, 1,000,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Admit it, there were at least times in recent years you thought Daniel Negreanu might never win another World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet. Perhaps, even he had moments of doubt.

There's no longer reason for anyone to doubt the Poker Hall of Famer, not after he took down one of the most prestigious tournaments in all of poker on Thursday, the $50,000 Poker Players Championship for over $1.1 million.

Negreanu's last bracelet came in 2013, and his most recent WSOP title in Las Vegas prior to the 2024 PPC occurred all the way back in 2008. It's been a long journey to bracelet No. 7, one we've chronicled in this article.
