Juan Carlos Latuff Bags Big After Day 1 of $500 Casino Employees

A total of 1,189 entrants filled the tables at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas for Event #2: $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold’em at the 2024 World Series of Poker, with 179 participants making the money and advancing to Day 2 tomorrow.

The turnout, which surpassed the number of entries from last year's event, generated a prize pool of $499,380. At the end of play tomorrow, the eventual champion will receive the lion’s share, $79,134 and the coveted WSOP bracelet.

After just over 15 levels of play, Caleb O’Donnell of Canada secured the chip lead with 583,000, with Bryan Lapham following in a close second with 529,000. The final player edging their way onto the podium was Juan Carlos Latuff with 479,000. Latuff catapulted his stack into one of the top positions after eliminating two players in quick succession during Level 14.

Other notable players who built and bagged a big stack include Jonathan Sanchez (468,000), Alexander ‘Optinal’ Green (436,000), William McCool (421,000), and Michael ‘Skull Mike’ Reisman (233,000).

PokerNews' Claudio Elizalde (308,000), Tyler Boyer (292,000), Chance Castro (159,000), Nick Becker (113,000), Lukas Robinson (110,000), Connor Richards (82,000), and Tyler Foran (52,000) also made it through to Day 2

Some notable players who didn't bag a stack include PokerNews' own Chad Holloway, the 2013 winner of this event, who won't be adding a second WSOP Employees title this time. Kyna England, Jesse Fullen, and Terrance Reid also fell just short of the end of play today.

Players will reconvene at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, at the Horseshoe for the Day 2 finale. Twenty-six minutes remain in Level 16, with blinds starting at 3,000/6,000 and a 6,000 big blind ante, continuing until a winner is crowned.

A player in middle position opened to 8,000, and Jonathan Brown three-bet to 23,000 from the cutoff. When it got back to him, the middle position player called, and they headed to the flop.

The middle position player checked the Q85 flop, and Brown bet out for 21,000. The middle position player called.

Once it checked to him on 9 turn, Brown bet 43,000. This was met by an immediate check-raise all in by the middle position player. After some thought, Brown made the call for his last 113,000 chips.

An exciting hand developed when the player in the under the gun position opened for 10,000. The player in middle position then three-bet to 25,000 and PokerNews's Connor Richards four-bet jammed his 26,200 stack. The under the gun player was then all in for 25,000 and middle position made the call.

When the hands were turned over under the gun had QQAll in, middle position had QQ, and Richards had KKAll in.

The board ran out J24 4 9 and Ricahrds's hand held for a much-needed double up.

The turn was a Q and after being checked to by the small blind Williams bet 4100. The small blind briefly deliberated before calling.

The 4 on the river went check check and Williams tabled QJ. The small blind showed 96 and remarked on all the draws she missed.

Welcome back to PokerNews, the official media partner of the 2024 World Series of Poker and home of live updates from all bracelet events.

Today sees the start of Event #2: $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold'em here at Horseshoe and Paris, Las Vegas.

This two-day event gets underway at 2 p.m. local time with late registration open for nine levels. This event allows for one reentry. There will be 15-minute breaks every three levels, with a 60-minute dinner break at the end of Level 9 (~8:30 p.m.)

The starting stack is 25,000 chips with the plan for Day 1 to play 15 40-minute levels or down to 15 percent of the field, whichever is later. For the surviving players, Day 2 resumes at 1 p.m. Wednesday and plays down to a winner.

Last year’s event was the third-largest Casino Employees Event in history, with a field of 1,015 entries generating a prize pool of $426,300. The winner was Peter Thai who defeated James Urbanic heads-up to win $75,535 and his first WSOP bracelet.

"I never expected to win," Thai told PokerNews. "I came here just wanting to have fun and one thing led to another. It was an unforgettable experience.”
