Sean Winter
Sean Winter

In a heads-up pot on a board of 844 with around 30,000 already in the middle, Zak Lawson checked from the small blind and Sean Winter bet 6,000 on the button. Lawson called.

Lawson checked on the 3 turn and Winter checked back. Lawson checked once more on the A river and Winter took some time before betting 15,500. Lawson quickly called.

Winter quickly showed AxJx before mucking as his opponent showed AQ to have the high roller outkicked.

Becker Gets Back-Raised

Level 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante
Johannes Becker
Johannes Becker

Johannes Becker raised to 1,200 from early position and Tom Rafferty called from the next seat over. The action then folded to the player in the big blind, who made it 5,500 to go.

Becker called before Rafferty decided to up the ante to 17,000 chips by back-raise four-betting. The big blind let his hand go and so did Becker, asking; "I show, you show?" before both players' holdings eventually reached the muck face down.

"That's what you can do when you have chips," Florencio Bunal chimed in from another seat at the table.

Up and Down for E-Tay

Level 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante
Esther Taylor
Esther Taylor

There was a raise to 1,500 in early position which was called by David Cowling on the button and Esther Taylor in the big blind. The flop came 872 and the action checked to Cowling who bet 1,900 and only Taylor called.

The turn brought the 5 and Taylor led out with a bet of 6,800. Cowling called and the 4 completed the board. Taylor splashed in another bet of 11,000 and Cowling was forced to fold. Taylor opted to show the 9 as she raked in the pot.

On the next hand, Tony Gregg raised to 1,000 on the button and Taylor just called from the small blind. Assad Kamran three-bet to 10,500 from the big blind and Gregg folded. Taylor stuck in a bunch of chips and Kamran called off his stack of 28,500.

Taylor turned over AQ and was flipping against the 1010 of Kamran. The board ran out 97647 and Kamran's pocket pair held on to double up through Taylor.

There was a raise in middle position to 1,500 and both the small blind, and Brad Owen in the big blind came along.

The dealer fanned a flop of Q32 and Owen check-called a bet of 2,300, while the small blind check-folded.

The A was quickly checked by both players and the 8 landed on the river. Owen grabbed a bet of 6,000 and tossed it in the middle and his opponent surrendered the pot.

Jamie Gold

Martin Vialla de Soleyrol opened to 1,300 from middle position and found one caller in Jamie Gold from the big blind.

Both players checked on the 526 flop and then Gold led out for 2,000 on the 7 turn. Vialla de Soleyrol called.

The 8 completed the board and Gold checked — prompting a 6,200 bet from Vialla de Soleyrol and sending Gold deep into the tank.

"All I have is a deuce I might call you," Gold said.

Gold did eventually put in a call and Vialla de Soleyrol tabled AQ for a busted flush draw. Gold had Q2 for a pair of deuces as advertised and collected the pot.

Big Stacks Wage War Late on Day 1a

Level 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Yehuda Dayan
Yehuda Dayan

There was a four-way pot on a table with many chips. Gianna Avdic McIntire played more than 200,000 when she bet out on 973 for 2,500 chips from the small blind. Yehuda Dayan, the chip leader in the silver section of the Horseshoe Event Center, was the only caller in the cutoff.

"Be careful, Gianna," Dayan warned Avdic McIntire when the J turn was dealt. She did not heed the warning and bet out another 2,500 before Dayan immediately raised it to 15,000.

"Be careful Gianna," Dayan repeated.

"Hmm," Avdic McIntire hummed. "I'm not sure."

Ultimately, she let her hand go, and Dayan received another pot to catapult him over the 400,000 mark.

Alex Livingston limped in from middle position which invited Jaime Kaplan along from the cutoff. Xuan Liu raised to 2,400 on the button and both Livingston and Kaplan called.

The flop came AA9 and the action checked to Liu who bet 1,500 which prompted two quick folds from her opponents.

As Liu raked in the pot, the waitress arrived at the table with a tray full of beers.

"Cheers," Livingston said with his beer in the air. "Five out of nine for beer level is not bad," referring to the five players that joined in the festivities.

Nitsche Joins Silver, Gets Gold

Level 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Dominik Nitsche
Dominik Nitsche

Dominik Nitsche has joined the silver tables of the main event for the last hour of Day 1a. A few hands after sitting down, he raised to 3,000 chips from middle position after a limp from an early position player.

James Jewell was next to act in the cutoff and three-bet jammed for 24,200. The limper folded while Nitsche eyed the all in, shrugged, and called.

James Jewell: AK
Dominik Nitsche: AQ

Nitsche was a big dog, but that changed when the flop came QJ2. His top pair would remain the best hand on the 95 runout and Nitsche scored a knockout in the final stages of Day 1a.

Aylar Lie raised 1,200 under the gun and only Kenji Harada made the call in the cutoff.

The dealer fanned a flop of 655, and Lie continued for 800. Harada called.

The 3 peeled off on the turn and Lie fired a second shell of 2,300 and Harada didn't go anywhere as he put in the call.

When the K landed on the river, Lie fired 7,500 into the middle, and Harada snap-called.

Lie mucked her hand and Harada tabled KQ for a pair of kings on the river.

Water on Table 601! Too Many Beers for Polk

Level 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Doug Polk
Doug Polk

The action folded around to Doug Polk in the small blind while Mike Smith pleaded for a walk in the big blind.

"I'm definitely not folding," Polk said as he threw in chips to call. Smith checked his option and the flop of J52 hit the felt. Both players checked and the A landed on the turn.

Polk checked again and Smith made a bet of 1,100 which Polk called. The river was the 6 and Polk checked again. Smith tossed in a bet of 1,900 and Polk looked him up. Smith turned over K9 for the nut flush.

"Ahh ha! I got you!" Polk shouted as he tabled his K6 and pushed the six forward showing his pair of sixes.

"I have the nuts!" Smith yelled back as he wiggled the K.

"Oh f***! I didn't see four spades on the board," Polk replied as the table burst into laughter. "Water on Table 601, please!"
