Arieh Can Beat a Pair (But Does Not)
Players were in a jovial mood at table 129, where 2021 WSOP Player of the Year Josh Arieh had just taken his seat. Arieh jumped straight into the action, raising from under the gun. A player in the cutoff called, as did Nathan Gamble out of the big blind.
On the initial draw all three players took two cards. Gamble checked to Arieh, who bet and was called by his two opponents. At this point Daniel Negreanu could be heard to say, "Josh Arieh has no clue what he is doing".
The second draw saw Gamble take two, Arieh one and the cutoff player two. Gamble checked again and Arieh continued his aggression with another bet. The player in the cutoff called and Gamble got out of the way to send the two players heads-up to the final draw.
Both players took one card on the third draw and at this point Arieh slowed down, checking to his opponent, who put in a bet and said that he could have a pair. As he tossed in calling chips, Arieh said, "I'm gonna call because you said you could have a pair". His opponent turned over at which point Arieh jokingly exclaimed, "you liar!".
