Lyons Bets Into Two Pair

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante

A player in early position limped in and Pat Lyons checked his option from the big blind. Lyons led out for 700 on the {k-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop, and again for 1,000 on the {6-Diamonds} turn. His opponent called both bets.

Lyons bet a third time on the {9-Diamonds} river, putting in 1,200. His opponent again called. Lyons showed {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} for a pair of fives, while his opponent showed {k-Clubs}{9-Hearts} for two pair, kings and nines.

"Can I ask you a bizarre question? Why did you play king-nine from all the way over there?," Lyons asked.

"King-nine is my second-favorite hand," his opponent responded.
