WSOP Legend: 10-Time Bracelet Winner Phil Ivey

Level 21 : 1,600/3,200, 400 ante
WSOP Legend Phil Ivey
WSOP Legend Phil Ivey

Few poker players have captured the attention of the poker universe quite like Phil Ivey. There have been plenty of champions of the game who crushed it at the felt, but none who built up the mystique of Ivey, who remains to this day arguably the most magnetic player in poker despite results that no longer match his days of utmost dominance.

A day after the anniversary of Ivey's induction into the Poker Hall of Fame, PokerNews examines the legacy of his WSOP success. Prior to 2000, Ivey didn't have any recorded WSOP cashes.

The 23-year-old didn't waste any time establishing himself as one of the top up-and-coming players. That year, after already making one final table and finishing fifth, Ivey secured his first bracelet. He beat none other than fellow Hall of Famer Amarillo Slim Preston heads up to win Event #14: $2,500 Pot-Limit Omaha, a rebuy event, for his first bracelet and $195,000. Three other Hall of Famers — Chris Bjorin, Phil Hellmuth and David "Devilfish" Ulliott — also competed at that final table, so shipping it was about more than just getting his first taste of gold. Ivey showed he could beat the best in the business.

Two years after that, though, would be when Ivey really showed he was the present and future of the game. In 2002, Ivey showcased his skills at limit poker in a big way.

Torrence Doubles Up on Fortunate River

Level 20 : 1,400/2,800, 350 ante

There was an open from "koolade99" to 5,600 in the hijack and it folded to Lily "theslimshady" Torrence in the big blind who shoved in her 36,690 chip stack. "koolade99" called and hands were revealed.

Lily "theslimshady" Torrence: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
"koolade99": {9-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Torrence needed some help and couldn't find it on the flop of {j-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{q-Clubs}. The {6-Spades} on the turn meant only an ace would save Torrence, and the {a-Clubs} river did just that, keeping her tournament life alive.

Gilbert Loses Race to Pandya

Level 20 : 1,400/2,800, 350 ante
James Gilbert
James Gilbert

Action on the table folded to Ketan "masaverake" Pandya who raised all in for 48,479 from the cutoff and James "fullmast" Gilbert called off his 42,359 stack on the button.

James "fullmast" Gilbert: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Ketan "masaverake" Pandya: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

Gilbert was behind looking to connect with either of his two over cards but none appeared on the {3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{j-Spades}{6-Clubs} runout and he was eliminated from the tournament.

Petrou Dropped

Level 19 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

"yogaprince62" raised under the gun and then called the 27,640 three-bet jam Demetrios "GOGGINS" Petrou made from the cutoff.

"yogaprince62": {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Demetrios "GOGGINS" Petrou: {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Petrou was behind needing a ten but none came on the {a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Clubs} flop. The {k-Hearts} turn left Petrou drawing dead and the {k-Clubs} river ended his tournament.

Ye "yuan365" Yuan Looking For Another Big Summer of Online Fun

Level 19 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Ye "Tony" Yuan
Ye "Tony" Yuan

Ye "yuan365" Yuan, also known as Tony Yuan, has a tiny amount of cashes on his Hendon Mob profile, with just $6,774 in career tournament earnings outside of one particularly big outlier. Yuan, a Ph.D Candidate of Mathematics and Probability at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, overcame the odds and made the final table of the 2020 WSOP $10,000 Main Event, after pushing through a field of 705 entrants.

“I still can’t believe it." Yuan told PokerNews about his run to the final table. "I don’t know how I made it, but someone I did. I was quite lucky to have some big hands. I won a coinflip when short-stacked with pocket nines against my opponent’s ace-jack offsuit." Yuan also was confident in the transition to the live final table, as opposed to online, saying, "I’m a live guy. I think my live play is better than my online play. I can read people.”

Yuan finally succumbed in fifth-place, losing a flip with ace-ten to the pocket fours of Joseph Hebert, but the $286,963 payday certainly helped put a big dent in his college tuition. Now, with another summer of online events waiting, Yuan will be looking to make another deep run payoff in similar fashion.
