Aaron Mermelstein

The short-stacked Aaron "Aaronmermel" Mermelstein, a WPT champ, moved all in for his last 1,050 from the lojack and James "maddogjim" Cavanaugh called out of the big blind.

Aaron "Aaronmermel" Mermelstein: {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
James "maddogjim" Cavanaugh: {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

The board ran out {7-Spades}{5-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{9-Hearts} and Cavanaugh ended up with two pair for the win.

Gottlieb Hits the Rail Early

Level 1 : 100/200, 0 ante

Seth "Allinbox2019" Gottlieb was one of the first players eliminated on the day as his stack was already decimated to a mere 3,200, appearing to have lost it previously to Jared "Jebronlames1" Bleznick, who sat with a big stack of 115,000.

Gottlieb went to the flop with his opponent, James "maddogjim" Cavanaugh.

The flop came down {k-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. Cavanaugh bet 600, and Gottlieb shoved all in for his remaining 2,800, which Cavanaugh called quickly.

Gottlieb had a draw holding the {4-Clubs}{3-Spades} and was trailing the pair of Cavanaugh, who had the {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}.

The turn was the {9-Hearts} and the river came the {8-Clubs}, which sent Gottlieb to the virtual rail.

Staats Notches First Elimination

Level 1 : 100/200, 0 ante
Christopher Staats
Christopher Staats

It didn't take long for the first player to fall in the 2020 WSOP Main Event on WSOP.com. Within two minutes of cards in the air, "ATOWNLEWIS" was eliminated at the hands of Chris "Pay_Son" Staats.

It happened when "ATOWNLEWIS" raised to 400 from middle position and Staats three-bet to 1,600 form the button. Both blinds folded, "ATOWNLEWIS" four-bet to 5,400, and Staats five-bet to 19,000. "ATOWNLEWIS" six-bet jammed for 60,000 and Staats called.

"ATOWNLEWIS": {k-}{k-}
Chris "Pay_Son" Staats: {a-}{a-}

It was a classic aces-versus-kings all-in preflop hand with the rockets of Staats holding up after a clean run out.

Welcome to Day 1 of the 2020 World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event on WSOP.com

Money & Bracelet
Money & Bracelet

Are you ready for the WSOP.com portion of the 2020 World Series of Poker (WSOP) $10,000 Main Event?

Today, players in Nevada and New Jersey will have the opportunity to compete in the last major tournament of 2020, a year that has caused nearly all poker operators to adapt.

For the WSOP, that meant moving the $10,000 Main Event to an online-live hybrid held on both GGPoker for international players and WSOP.com for domestic players. Each field will play to a final table — the GGPoker portion has already reached its final table — and it'll take two full days for the field to get there.

Today at Noon local time, the sole starting flight will get underway. The tournament, which is played in a freezeout format, will start players with 60,000 in chips and play 30-minute levels. Late registration will remain open for six hours (6 p.m. local time). The plan for the day is to play 12 hours with the surviving players returning at Noon PST on Monday, December 14 to play down to the final table of nine. That final table is then slated to play out live at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino on December 28 (it will also be recorded for broadcast on ESPN).

The winner of this tournament along with the winner of the GGPoker portion will then battle one-on-one in a special heads-up finale on December 30. The winner will not only walk away with a $1,000,000 prize added by GGPoker and the WSOP, but also claim the coveted gold bracelet and title of 2020 WSOP Main Event champion!

The start of the tournament is still a few hours away, and already 213 players are registered as of publication time. Among them are some familiar names including Tony "ToNiSiNz" Sinishtaj, Frank "thewholefunk" Funaro, Eric "circleball" Baldwin, Ryan "Protential" Laplante, Shannon "Aulophobia" Shorr, Ian "APokerJoker2" Steinman, Robert "bustinballs" Kuhn, and Katie "katelin" Lindsay. Many others are expected to jump into action including Daniel Negreanu and Mike Matusow.

PokerNews will be there every step of the way from the first hand all the way until the final table is set late Monday night. Be sure to join us over the next couple of days to see who thrives and who fails to survive.
