Enter the Champ

Level 1 : 500/1,000, 0 ante
Phil Hui
Phil Hui

OK, not the defending champ, perhaps, but a champ nonetheless. Phil Hui, winner of the $50,000 Poker Players Championship for just under $1.1 million has grabbed a seat at Table 427. Hui has showed off his limit prowess before, not just in the PPC, but also with a second-place finish in the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. in 2017.

He'll be a player to keep tabs on as the $10K Limit Hold'em Championship rolls on.

Backing into Top-Top

Level 1 : 500/1,000, 0 ante

Eric Wasserson opened under the gun, Reese Newell three-bet and Gregory Back cold-called. Wasserson made it three to the {4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop and Newell fired again. Everyone stuck around and the {7-Spades} checked through. The river was a {q-Hearts} and Wasserson checked. Newell bet, Back raised and Wasserson folded. Newell called but mucked to {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}.

Big Pot to Negreanu Early

Level 1 : 500/1,000, 0 ante

On a {5-Clubs}{10-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop, Daniel Negreanu put in a raise on the button after a bet from the cutoff. The player in the hijack made it three bets, the cutoff made it four, and Negreanu called. The hijack called as well and action checked to Negreanu on the {4-Hearts}. He bet and the hijack raised. The cutoff tank-folded and Negreanu called. On the {j-Diamonds} river, the hijack bet, Negreanu raised and the hijack called.

Negreanu showed {j-Hearts}{j-Spades} for top set.

"Good river," he said when someone told him nice hand. "I think he had jacks beat."

Welcome to Day 1 of Event #72: $10,000 Limit Hold'em Championship

Just one day away from the $10,000 World Series of Poker Main Event, there's a little appetizer in store for players willing to pony up $10K for the limit variety. It's time for Day 1 of Event #72: $10,000 Limit Hold'em Championship.

Like all of the $10,000 championship events, the $10K Limit Hold'em will start players off with 60,000 in tournament chips and see them play 10 levels lasting an hour apiece with no dinner break. Play begins with limits of 500/1,000 and continues up through a double level of 3,000/6,000.

No re-entry is allowed in this event, so players only get one shell each.

Last year, Scott Seiver topped a field of 114 for $296,222, joined by likes of Anthony Zinno and Dan Zack at the final table. Previously Joe McKeehen won it in 2017. Like all of the $10Ks, plenty of poker's stars are expected to turn out for the min-betting extravaganza.

Stay tuned to PokerNews to find out how Day 1 develops.
